Need Help
Hi all, I am so confused, my daughter is almost four months old and has had silent reflux diagnosed at 4 weeks old. Zantac did nothing so she's been on oral suspension Prevacid and alimentuem since then. Everything was going much better and the last three weeks were the best yet, in fact they thought she might be rid of it. All of a sudden she is so hoarse and we can tell she is refluxing all the time b/c she is constantly clearing her throat. She had espophogitis so severely at 5 weeks she couldn't eat or gain weight. That was the last time she was so hoarse. My question is do you all think it's a cold or the prevacid just stopped working? I'm so nervous b/c she is miserable and crying all the time again. I feel like she has more gas now than she did when she was little, is that the medicine. Any opinions would be helpful. No fever any other symptoms, but all of a sudden hoarse voice/cry, bloated stomach and chewing her fingers like crazy. Thanks for the help.

There is no way to be sure if a cold is causing the laryngitis or is the acid from the reflux causing voice changes. Both can resolve over time. Unfortunately a lot of this reflux stuff is guesswork. It is possible if your daughter gained weight since Prevacid was started that the dose needs adjustment to go with the weight gain. Remember that Prevacid only decreases acid reflux but does not stop reflux of food. My daughter is now ten months old. She has good days/weeks then bad ones. Reflux does not have a linear trend i.e. the symptoms fluctuate just with time and luck, not always because of a cold, medications etc. Virus infections like your daughter might have can slow gastric emptying for several weeks that can worsen reflux so it could be two problems. I really hope she is feeling better.

Audrey Meadow 06/20/08. born 34/35 weeks. Still b/f and eats everything! ftt and chronic constipation.
is it possible that she could be teething? i know it's a tiny bit early but it is not outside the realm of possibility. reflux tends to go a bit crazy when little ones teeth. the only real way to tell between a cold (or virus) and reflux is take her to the doctor and have them evaluate her.

in some kiddos, constipation is a side effect of prevacid, that could explain the excess gas and bloated belly; something else you can ask the pedi about. I hope you can figure out what is going on soon!

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Read his story for more specifics that just might help you too - Karen
How old is the bottle of compounded prevacid that you are using right now. Many times the compounded prevacid looses its effectiveness after 2 1/2 weeks. That might be your issue. If you start a fresh bottle and things are great again, you have your answer.
