Reflux returned? Hoarse voice
DS has been on prevacid since one month old (currently 2 3/4 years). I recently did a slow wean off the prevacid. It's been 3 weeks since I stopped the medication. For the past 2 weeks, he's had a really hoarse/raspy voice. He doesn't have any cold or illness symptoms. He also has had a lot of behavioral issues...frequent tantrums and screaming fits. I know he is a toddler but this is out of character for him. He was binkie weaned during the day and now he constantly wants to suck on his binkie all day long. He also just wants to sit and watch TV. He normally is very, very active and it is very difficult to engage him in playing. It just seems like something is off. He's had a few mornings that he has thrown up or said "milk coming up" and ran into the bathroom. Could the reflux have returned?

Yes, it could have returned. :(

We tried a med wean and failed and Jedd is almost 3.5 years old. It ended badly, with vomiting and food refusals.

Maybe you could go back on meds and give it a week or two and see if things go back to normal. Then you would know it was a med issue and not something else.

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Read his story for more specifics that just might help you too - Karen
Unfortunately it sounds like he was not ready to be weaned yet. If it were me I would put him back on the meds and see if things straighten back out. If so, then you have your answer. Try again in 6 months. Sorry!!

It does sound like reflux is rearing it's ugly head again. Very sorry! It took us several tries to get my oldest weaned off her meds. I would call the GI an see what they recommend. They may have some suggestions to make it easier.

Just thinking out loud but... I have often wondered if it would be easier to wean from a med like zantac instead of prevacid. I know that I myself went from prevacid to nothing and had huge problems. The next time I tried to get off meds I went from prevacid to zantac and then tried to wean from there. It worked better that way. At least that was My experience. ;)

((HUGS)) to you!!! I hope that he feels better and that the med wean works next time you try it.
