Mason Matthew born at 28 weeks on 12/10/2007 with MSPI and severe reflux. Still on Neocate, strict MSPI diet, recently weaned off of Prevacid.
Evalise Adelle came along 4 weeks early on 12/2/2009 we thought we could be without this reflux stuff but no such luck. She's MSPI as well, off of breastmilk :-( and on Neocate for MSPI, has eczema (better with Neocate), and worse reflux than her brother did! Doing Buffer babies and Prevacid-
Buffer Babies/Prevacid/Dec appetite
Hi all-to those of you using Buffer babies and Prevacid OTC I'd love to hear how you are getting the med out of the capsule. It takes me FOREVER and I am picking out a ton of pieces of capsule. It is a nightmare, am I missing something here??? Also, I love that I don't have to hold DD off for the 30 minute dosing ordeal anymore and I think the lactose in the solutab was a problem for her but with the Marci-kids dosing, while her reflux seems better, she barely eats. It's a nightmare. When she does try to eat it's like she suddenly doesn't know how to swallow?! Has this happened to anyone else and what did you do? Back off of the dosing? Switch PPI's (or can that happen with all of them?) I did a forum search to see that Dr. Phillips did say that could happen (decreased appetite with Prevacid)... Thanks for any suggestions you might have- Jodi

Hi jodi. We started buffer babies with Prevacid the first of February. My husband came up with the brillant idea of using a box cutter (exacto knife) to open the capsules. This has prevented the capsule from splitting into a million small parts as they do with scissors. So I carefully cut in a circular motion the pink tip off of the capsule. Let me know if you need clearer directions! Feel free to email me at jgsbennett@gmail.com. As far as the appetite. Yes, my LO doesn't finish his bottles as he once did. However, he has maintained his weight as he's not puking much at all anymore! Actually, his last recorded puke was a week ago! Wow! And he is sleeping 10-11 hours at night. Before buffer babies we were up every two hours. So I am seeing big changes that for us, outway the decrease in appetite.

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Read his story for more specifics that just might help you too - Karen
Hello! I have been using Caracream and Prevacid since July. When the prevacid capsules were behind the counter they did not have the black band around the middle. They started that when it when OTC. I am still able to pull it apart in the middle though. Just grasp both ends and do a twisty pull. I open them over a bowl and then use a small funnel to pour them all into the caracream bottle. The generic Prevacid which is only available behind the counter does not have the band in the middle and those capsules slip right apart. That is what I am using now.

Regarding the decrease in appetite.... Once I got Ryan on the Caracream I was able to back his dosage down from 30 mg a day to 21mg because all of the meds were finally getting into his system, therefore he didn't need as high of a dose. You may find the same thing for your loved one. Maybe try giving it a couple of weeks and then expiriment a little, one ml at a time. You many see his appetite reboud. Also keep in mind that childrens appetites ebb and flow based on growth spurts. Again, give it a couple of weeks and see what happens. Oh, and don't forget that the stomach flu is rampade right now. Don't get discouraged if you don't see miraculous results right away. You just never know what else might be going on. Stick with it. I hope you get the same amazing results that we did. Ryan went for the 2nd percentile in weight to the 52nd percent in 6 weeks!!! No more ER visits and not a single more drinking strike. Whoo Hoo!!!

Thanks! I'll try both and see what comes of it! I am interested to hear that you've been using the generic Prevacid with good results. I have some of it but haven't tried it yet as I'm afraid it won't work the same for her. Sometimes that's the case with generics and sometimes not. She is so new on this combo that I don't want to rock the boat! As far as backing down the dose, she only gets 3mls which is what I was told to give her but the Buffer Babies manual says the minimum should be 3.5ml so I don't know if I should be giving less even less than the 3ml (9mg)...
