How did Prevacid help your infant?
I am giving Prevacid to my son who is 5 weeks. I have read a number of post and articles so I can determine if the Prevacid is working but still haven't found an answer. For those of you who are giving Prevacid to your children - how did you know it was working? What symptoms disappeared? He has been on it for over a week but still arches, gags, coughs, grunts, and spits up. He has yet to have a problem with feeding and doesn't cry during or after a feeding. From the articles I have read the poor feeding and crying seem to be the only symptoms that went away.

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Read his story for more specifics that just might help you too - Karen
Prevacid will not stop reflux. It only removes the acid component which eliminates the burn and the hurt of reflux, thus feeding improves as well as the arching and screaming. It also stopped the gagging and coughing for my son. It can take up to 2 weeks to see improvement so hang in there and give it a little more time.

Sweetems' Mommie
I can tell you from my first hand experience his arching and screaming went away within 4 days. But my little one still spit up but didn't have the cough he just ate then looked at you and out the food came; then he smiled. As Ryan's mom stated it takes upto 2 weeks to get fully into the system. At the initial time my son was put on Prevacid he was also on Zantac, and regland to help him along. The specialist also told me to try and feed him less at each feeding. Which of course I just chuckeled at since I was giving him 20 minutes each breast and then 20 minutes off for him to spit it all back out just to do it again. But I tried only 10 min feedings total with greater time inbetween. Eventually he got to keeping the liquids down better and more liquids at one setting too. Hope this helps.

Donnessa, mom to Halley born 3/10/07
Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
With my first daughter, who had significantly worse reflux than my youngest, we saw no improvement for the first three weeks, then after the third week, we saw a dramatic improvement in her arching and grunting. She continued to projectile vomit until 9 months of age, but because she was not uncomfortable at all, it was just a laundry problem. With my youngest daughter, it kicked in a little sooner - after about a week and a half. Make sure that you're giving the meds on an empty stomach about 30 minutes before feeding (and don't give it within 4 hours of an antacid). HTH.

Hi, My daughter started prevacid just a week ago. 7.5 mg once a day. I don't see much difference yet. She is still refusing the bottle. I am lucky if I can get 12 oz into her and she is 5 months old. She's been like this past 1-2 weeks before that she ate enough. The doctor increased her dose to now 15mg once a day. I hope that makes a big difference. Did anyone's baby have diarrhea with prevacid?
