Narrowing of airway?
We finally had a soft tissue xray taken to look at my LO's adenoids. They are large, of course, but the xray also shows that he has a very severe narrowing of his airway. So we are off to another specialist in New Orleans on Monday to find out what this means. Just wanted to throw this topic out in case any of you have been through this. Is it reflux related?

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Read his story for more specifics that just might help you too - Karen
What made you decide to have an xray done of his adenoids? I have thought asking about that too.

my LO had 10 ear infections before tubes and since tubes he's had two more, plus several pneumonia episodes, not sleeping, snoring, foul smell on breath, etc. Our developmental ped and regular ped have mentioned sleep apnea and asked about th adenoids. I've asked my ENT for over a year to look at my son's throat and he won't do it! He said the guidelines are to wait until a child is two. So I've been frustrated.....especially since our esophogial strictures were dx back in October. My LO aspirated again at the end of Jan and we were back at the doctor. During that visit this adenoids topic came up again. I explained my frustration with the ENT and My sweet pediatrician said he'd fight the ENT battle for me! So he ordered the soft tissue xray just to have proof and then refer me to a new ENT. The surprise we discovered is that my son has this really narrow airway. Just got these results Monday and we already seeing a specialist in New Orleans this coming up Monday. Makes me think the worst when they fit me in so quickly! I'll let you know what it all means as soon as I know.

OMG -- I am so furious on your behalf!!!! Why does it take so long for doctors to respond to our concerns!!!!

The narrow airway, as I understand it, can be genetic, but it could also be an inflammatory process brought on by reflux. I ma glad they are getting you in to a specialist so soon, and I highly recommend that if they do not suggest it, you insist on a sleep study AND a referral to a Cardiologist. Narrow airways are a common cause of Obstructive Sleep Apnea, and undiagnosed OSA is a potential cause of heart enlargement. I have to run, but you can go to www.sleepapnea.org to find more information -- there's a pediatric forum which has links to interesting information. I'll try to get on and send more links to you later if you like.

Our dev. ped. did mention her concerns about sleep apnea at our last visit. Thanks for reminding me to bring that up! I just hope we get some answers soon and have some sort of roadmap to follow. Thanks so much for all of your support!

Mary & Nicholas 7-17-03 (non-refluxer)allergies, asthma on Singulair and Flovent & Aidan 1-28-07(my refluxer)Nissen Fundoplication on June 20, 2008, FTT, MSPI, DGE, ear tubes, allergies and severe GERD now currently taking just Prevacid and drinking Elecare Vanilla 1+.
My son had narrowing of his airway too and it was completely from the reflux and it always showed worse on x-ray especially when he was sick. He often sounded hoarse from it. I hope you get some answers on Monday.
