My baby does not want to drink!Hi, My baby is 3 1/2 months old. She always had spit up however we were able to feed her enough to bring her to 55th percentile. The past two weeks my baby doesn't want to drink, she is showing symptoms of hunger. I was told that she has an anxiety for feeding because she knows it will cause a pain. My daughter does not have a pattern. Like this morning with a little push I was able to get her to drink 5 oz but for the feeding right now she won't even take a sip. She is very unpredictable. I don't know if its the formula, the enfamil Vitamin D drops, the constipation she has, the reflux, her temper, colic, etc. I can't get my baby to drink more than 19-20 oz a day and that's with me waking up in the middle of the night and pushing her. I can't wait to start solid for her, I hope she does better with solid. PLEASE ANY SUGGESTIONS

Kathryn, Pager Volunteer and mommy to Emily Mia 02/04/07. 3 years old with GERD. 30mg Prevacid and Pepcid AC. Mylanta needed for flares. Failed prilosec med switch. Tried and failed many med weans but GERD and pain are well controlled. Functional constipation. Reoccurring SBBO. Suspected IBD or autoimmune disease. Resolved issues: MSPI, CSID (acquired), Stage 2 kidney reflux, Chronic diarrhea.
Audrey Meadow 06/20/08. born 34/35 weeks. Still b/f and eats everything! ftt and chronic constipation.
|if she is gaining weight and it is okay with the pedi i would drop the vitamins. i know from experience and from some other moms, for what ever reason, vitamins make reflux worse. and well reflux does caused reduced appetite as well, i hesitate to say she has a feeding aversion yet and tend to lean more towards the constipation causing the eating wane. but that is just my opinion. |
My Audrey who did not have reflux, experienced it to a small degree when she was really constipated (she was thought to have Hirschsprung's disease but did not). I would ask her pedi about treating her constipation as well as her reflux because constipation WILL cause reflux to worse in babies that alrady have reflux.
now i will add, Emily never drank more then 20oz a day her entire infant life. and she thrived on nutramigen until 18 months. She was considered very unhealthy by her team of doctors. Audrey on the other hand had endless breast feedings plus an extra 8 oz of formula and was still underweight but considered healthy by the pedi and the GI.
so i would advise you you to please ask your pedi if this is normal for you daughter and remember to add or take away one thing at a time to know the true results. I remember when Emily was about 5 months old we had to cup feed her because she was unable to breastfeed and refused the bottle. this may be something you might want to look into. good luck mama!

Not drinking milkHi,
Thanks for your comment.
My doctor did advise me to stop the vitamin d drops because I am not breastfeeding her, I was afraid she was not getting vitamin because she is drinking less therefore continued with the vitamin, perhaps I should stop that cuz your right that could be one of the reason for her being constipated.
I really hope my daughter does not have food aversion, it would be so difficult. I did get my daughter to drink 2 oz in one feed and 4 oz in the other feed, with a bit of push. What's Hirschsprung's disease?
Dr as advised me to give my daughter colace drops.
How old is your daughter now? She never drank more than 20oz of formula? If you don't mind me asking, what percentile was she for her weight? How is she doing now? How did she do with her solids?
Thank you so much for your advice.

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Read his story for more specifics that just might help you too - Karen
|I completely agree with the PP on dropping the vitamins and treating the constipation. You can expiriment yourself to find out if constipation is dampening her appetitine by giving her a little Milk of Magnesium or aluminum free Mylanta Cherry Supreme. Ask your pharmacist for the dosage. Keep her "easily going" for a few days and see what happens to her appetite. Be sure to space it away from any reflux meds she is on. Speaking of, what is she on, how much and how do you administer it. Might be a med problem.|

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
|My son never drank much more than that...ever. He was never on the charts as he was a 31 weeker, BUT he was more or less always healthy. You have got to get the constipation under control...if she can't poop she's always going to feel full. Ask your doc about adding Miralax to the bottles...not so sure about it at that age...we didn't start adding it til a few months ago (Z is 2). Also is she on meds? A PPI for reflux? If not, talk to your doc now...if the acid is reduced it may hurt her MUCH less to be fed then...it made a HUGE difference for us.
We've all been there...it's misery when your kid won't eat! GOod luck!|

Which medication did you give your babyHi, My baby is now 4 1/2 months and the problem started again. She was on omperazole and it working fine and now we refilled the bottle of medicine and after few days its not working. We are going to get a new bottle just in case the compound was not mixed properly. What else could it be? I can see my baby struggling to swallow the milk. Which medication did you give your baby at 4 months?
This is very difficult. My baby is only 4 months so I have long way to go. :(
