Mason Matthew born at 28 weeks on 12/10/2007 with MSPI and severe reflux. Still on Neocate, strict MSPI diet, recently weaned off of Prevacid.
Evalise Adelle came along 4 weeks early on 12/2/2009 we thought we could be without this reflux stuff but no such luck. She's MSPI as well, off of breastmilk :-( and on Neocate for MSPI, has eczema (better with Neocate), and worse reflux than her brother did! Doing Buffer babies and Prevacid-
Help (here again!) (prevacid solutabs/zantac)
Hello, I've been here before with/for my son about 2 years ago and hoped not to be back but here I am. This forum was VERY helpful then and I hope it can help now. My profile says most of this but I have an 8 week old DD born 4 weeks early with a lot of "issues". She seems to have worse MSPI than her brother did (common I guess) and has been switched from breastmilk to Neocate one week ago (even with me on the elimination diet she was miserable). She has had symptoms of reflux since 2 weeks of age but everything got worse around her due date one month ago. She's extremely fussy, sleeps poorly whenever I can get her to sleep (always upright), has nasal wetness (sounds raspy from refluxed material I think), audibly refluxes chokes and gags on it (often this wakes her if I'm lucky enough to get her to sleep), she's small but not failure to thrive small, and now projectile vomits occasionally. She has an ultrasound this Friday to rule out pyloric stenosis for the projectile vomit. She has a terrible time drinking from a bottle, most of it runs out the sides of her mouth even with a stage one nipple. Worse with Born Free and a little better with Dr. Browns. My questions for any of you out there are these. First any experiences like this with bottles and what did you do? I am always using the newborn nipples??? Secondly, she was doing so-so on Zantac but has a terrible time taking it. It is awful tasting, she chokes/gags and often vomits it up so I stopped giving it. Thoughts or experiences here?? And lastly, she was started on a small dose of the prevacid solutabs (7.5mg once per day) 3 days ago and has had more gas since then. When people had problems with the solutabs what kind of problems were they? Could the lactose in them be causing her problems? I appreciate any thoughts, we're in a world of hurt here! Thanks, Jodi

Help (here again!) (prevacid solutabs/zantac)
As far as the bottles goes, is it running out the sides of her mouth because it's flowing too fast or is she just not sucking? When my daughter was first born the formula would run out of here mouth so we switched to the Dr. Brown's preemie flow nipples and it did help with the flow. I did have an occupational therapist look at her to exam her feeding and sucking skills just to make sure the issue wasn't lack of sucking, but if you notice she has a strong suck it's probably the bottles flowing too fast. With the gas I have heard and read that reflux babies tend to have way more gas then non-reflux babies. When my daughter was on prevacid she had severe gas, but even know on zantac she has gas. It's to the point where she will wake up if she's been sleeping in one position too long in pain so I don't have any suggestions on the gas or if it's medicine related. If she has a lactose intollerance it could be causing her more gas then normal, but again my daughter was on neocate and taking prevacid (we had the pills that we had to break open and feed her so they didn't have any lactose in them) and she still had terrible gas.

That's strange. My baby had horrible gas with prevacid solutabs. We switched to prilosec and things got a lot better after about three weeks. It seems like we have the acid under control now (no more back arching) though she is still in alot of discomfort at night. Good luck. P.S. I switched to Neocate from breastmilk (elimination diets didn't work for me either), and I think this helped too--so maybe you're in for some relief soon.

Thanks for your input, I appreciate it. I am using a newborn nipple, she seems to be doing better overall on Dr. Brown's than Born Free. If she continues to have problems maybe I'll try the preemie nipples. Sadie's mom, we're on day 10 of Neocate and I think (fingers crossed) that I see some small improvements, it was a hard decision to make-
