Hospital Recommendations
Hi All, We moved to AL over the summer and we are looking for a new hospital close to us. We have heard Vanderbilt is really good. Anyone have any first hand experience? We are most likely going to be doing a Nissen redo/hernia repair. So we are looking for a qualified ped surgeon. We are willing to drive if anyone has other suggestions of good hospitals in the South. Anyone been to Texas Childrens. That is quite a drive for us but I am willing to go to the best. Any thoughts?

Unfortunately, I can't speak from any experience in your state. I did a little bit of research, and found an article authored by several surgeons. One of the surgeons is in the same office as my daughter's, another is from the Children's Hospital of Birmingham, Al. Going purely by association, I'd say it might be a start to check into this person. Here's a link: Elizabeth Owings, MD http://www.liebertonline.com/doi/abs/10.1089/10926410152776360?cookieSet=1&journalCode=pei Darn, looks like she's now in Mo. : http://www.healthgrades.com/directory_search/physician/profiles/dr-md-reports/Dr-Elizabeth-Owings-MD-DEB53644.cfm

Thanks for the info Sam. It is interesting to read your story. I haven't met too many people on this board who have done the Nissen and certainly none until you that have had to do a repair to it. How did you know your daughters Nissen had come undone just from imaging or was she having symptoms?

Hi Mary, She had a lot of symptoms. We also had several upper GI studies (barium in the g-tube) Lacie's symptoms were vomiting / retching. This became a daily problem, but the Dr's don't want to operate unless absolutely necessary, so it went on for too long. The most recent upper GI's revealed at one point, a small hiatal hernia. Then, a later one, showed the hernia was quite large. This made it clear to the Dr's that there was no other option.

We live on the Mississippi coast and see a GI in Mobile, AL at the University of South Alabama. It's the closest to me and it's pretty good, however, the Children's Hospital in Birmingham has an EXCELLENT rep in all categories and I would feel 100% comfortable going there. They are a leading teaching hospital and have tons of resources. Can't believe there is someone else from the south on here! Welcome, Ginger
