reflux and illnesses related?
Hi everyone! I haven't posted in awhile. Kody is now a year old and we still are dealing with reflux issues. He's been sick for like 3 months. He's come down with everything from throat infections, bronchitis, ear infection and lots of colds in between.

I would love to know if anyone knows if all these illnesses he keeps getting could be related to his reflux or if anyone has this many illnesses? He was on erythromycin and prevacid. But we had taken him off of the erythro because he was doing better for awhile. We haven't put him back on it yet. Could that be related to all the congestion and coughing? He is on a probiotic as well but it doesn't seem to keep him from getting sick at all. Keeps his bowel under control and it used to help control his reflux but to no avail anymore.

Any advice on how to handle this ongoing battle with him being sick all the time? I'm losing my mind. He just went to ped on Thursday and was suppose to have his well child check with shots. We opted to skip the shots until he feels better. We've dealt with an ear infection through three different antibiotics. One in which he had an allergic reaction to. That's cleared up but he got some kind of stomach flu now. He also has dropped from the 50-75 percentile on weight to 25-50th now. He's not losing weight just won't gain any in the last 3 months. Frustrating! I need him to get better so I can put weight on him and keep my sanity. It's insane he's always sick. The stress is getting to me and I've even got out of the house a lot to do different things. Thanks for any input!

I hate to say this.....but I know exactly how you feel! UGH! Stanton is sick pretty much all the time. He got ear tubes back in July and our August and September were pretty good, but October sure brought the constant something back. I do feel, and so does my ped, that's it's all reflux related. Until we get the reflux under control, it will be difficult to keep him healthy. My ped said that when a child refluxes, it can go into the ear and sinus cavity and "linger" which irritates the area and thus leads to congestion, ear infections, etc.

Lorenzo b.4/25/07 1 week in NICU w/ aspirate pneumonia from a reflux episode; diagnosed GERD at 9weeks; Used Zantac for 5months. Currently using Chinese Medicine and Craniosacral Therapy. GERD, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Sensory Processing Disorder. Ask me about breastfeeding a refluxer! Pic: day 5 in the NICU.
We had the same experience. 26 infections in 24 months last year. Also believed to be reflux related. I wish I could send all of you to the miracle worker of a Chinese Medicine Practitioner we started seeing -- sine she started working with Lorenzo 7 months ago, he has been sick once (during a wildfire here, which had everyone's respiratory system falling apart) and, perhaps most importantly, has shown symptoms of beginning to get sick, then never coming down with anything, half a dozen times. It has totally changed our lives, since we had to be practically hermits last year from all the illness (and sleep deprivation, since he has apnea, and when he's sick, breathing just doesn't happen unless he's vertical), and his weight also took a nose dive.

Short of finding a treatment that really works for the reflux or other underlying issues, I highly recommend becoming completely obnoxious about germ intervention -- get an industrial size box of alcohol hand wipes or gel, use them before and after contact with anything even remotely germy, and run like the wind if you see another little kid coming Kody's way with a runny nose or cough. If you're interested, I can try to find out the source of the herbal remedy we give to Lorenzo at the first sign of illness or contact with a sick person. It's not the only thing we use (we also do bodywork/massage) but it seems to be extremely successful at keeping him well, even when we forget to do the other stuff.

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
Honestly, with a GERD kid and that many ear infections now, I'd opt for tubes. With soo much fluid already coming up from reflux, tubes will keep the infections at bay. Jedd got tubes and never got another infection.

I'd go back on the erythromycin for now and see if it helps too. The congestion could be that more reflux is now coming up because the food is getting to sit there for longer.

Again, for Jedd, his first two winters were the hardest on him. After that, they got much easier to bear. He was born in Oct so he was tiny his first winter (with an unrepairable heart to boot which made it even worse), and only just 1 for his second winter.

For us during those 2 first winters, we were just looking to maintain weight and not loose too much. If you do that, then IMHO, you are doing pretty good at his age. Then, during spring summer and fall, try to pack on the pounds as you can.

Thanks for the responses. My ped seems to think that he's just getting sick from the germs that my daughter brings home from school. I did think that it was that at first but now that he keeps getting sick I started thinking maybe it's the reflux.

He has only had this one ear infection. He went through a lot of throat infections and seems to get a lot of runny noses and congestion. Right now his one year molars are coming in and that is causing all kinds of problems. It's good to hear from other reflux moms that have dealt with this. I don't feel so alone now which is usually the case when I get on here.

Jessica-Currently we're just trying to keep Kody from losing weight at this point too. The winter might be a long one if we can't keep him healthy. I remember you saying you had Jedd on probiotics. Did it take a while for them to start keeping him healthy? Kody has been on them for like over 2 months and it doesn't seem to be helping him keep from getting sick. Thanks everyone!

Debbie, Mom to:
Derek,10/29/02 GERD,Can't have any legumes(soy, being the worse), allergic to PN/Tree Nuts, struggled to gain weight for years, my "picky" eater,Takes Zegerid. Johnny, 12/05/99 GERD, managed by diet, allergic to cashews/pistachios.
Do you see an allergist? Have they ever tried an inhaler or nebulizer when he is sick? Asthma often comes with reflux. Both my kids have it. Before they were on inhalers they were sick all the time. Also we use a squirt of "Afrin" nose decongestant when they get real congested to dry them up, the reflux always makes colds worse.

We had the same issues with our reflux kids. Constantly sick! Ours also have asthma. Their asthma looked a lot like colds because it exhibited itself at the beginning with a lot of coughing. After they were treated for asthma it was like night and day. They currently do well with Flovent and it has decreased the # of "illnesses". Though I do think they are still sick more than kids w/o reflux... definitely. It's frustrating for sure. That all having been said, my oldest has outgrown her reflux and she is not sick any more than a kid without reflux so there is hope for all of us!! I often wonder if because reflux can make things like the throat and sinuses (esp if they puke out the nose) raw if it ups the chances of getting an infection. Have you tried saline in his sinuses? esp after puking episodes. It helps the girls.

doctor first!
