Audrey Meadow 06/20/08. born 34/35 weeks. Still b/f and eats everything! ftt and chronic constipation.
|i do. Audrey was a refluxer at birth but come 3 months of age she was not anymore. she still had, though, severe constipation. At 1 month of age she was on sugar water 2x a day, 2 months prune juice. 3 months prune and apple juice- and sugar water, all produced nothing. the only way we could get her to poop was with a suppository, not even rectal stimulation worked!|
we stopped all juice b/c she was a poor eater and gainer and juice was replacing meals and at 3 months of age she went on lactulose (enulose syrup) and at first it seemed to help. a week later she bloated up HUGE and couldn't poop for anything for 9 days. near hospitalization we finally got her to go with enema. and i took her to see emily's GI. We continued with the lactulose even though bloating an not pooping continued and we had to do suppositories every couple days but she was bloated and miserable.
Audrey was strictly b/f until this point when per GI suggestion we added in lactose free formula as supplement b/c of poor weight gain. we saw the GI when she was 5 months old ( i think) and prescribed her milk of magnesia. it didn't work so she was sent for a contrast enema. the contrast enema suggested Hirschsprung's Disease. This is a very rare condition of missing nerve cells in the rectum. Audrey had 3 suction biopsies and ruled out HD. she is now considered to have severe idiopathic constipation.
at 17 months we manage her constipation with 2 tsps milk of magnesia every day. i hope this helps! if you have any other questions let me know! :)
