Daughter, Mia, born IUGR weighing 4 lbs. 10 oz, diagnosed with reflux at 2 months, open heart surgery to repair VSD at 7 months. Currently on Prevacid & Erythromycin. One happy little girl despite her many struggles!
Probiotics
I asked the GI doc about starting Probiotics for Mia. He was all about it and recommended Culturelle Kids. Anyone else use Probiotics for their reflux kids? Any success? Also, do I need to worry about timing the Probiotics with the Prevacid and/or Erythromycin?

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Most of us use them. I use BioGaia for Ryan my refluxer. You only need 5 tiny drops which is super convienent. You can put it on or in anything. I get it from Target at the pharmacy counter. It is refrigerated which makes it more potent. No issues with timing. I started using the Culteral Kids with my 5 yr old in an attempt to ward off all the cooties that are going around. We see if it works. : ) http://www.biogaia.com/Page/Standard/121/BioGaia-Probiotic-drops-.aspx

I use culturelle daily too. It's easy to use. Just mix it right into a bottle.

Thanks everyone! What improvements have you seen from the Probiotics?

My GI said that 70% of our immune system is in the digestive system. So kids with reflux have gi issues and therefore need some help to ward off illness and infection. My little one got sick ALL the time. We had 10 ear infections befor tubes and just a constant sinus/upper respitory issues. The Culturelle has really made a difference and we are not always sick. Also, we've had 2 bouts of pneumonia due to aspiration....antibiotics just kill my son's stomach. The Cultrelle has kept diarrhea at bay when on antibiotics. We've only been on them for about 6 weeks now but I have seen a difference.

Ditto to everything above. Plus general over all stomach comfort. You can just tell he fells better.

If Mia is on antibiotics often they will also ward off the after affects of diaper rash and yeast infections that little girls can get from antibiotics.

DD 10 mos.
15 mg prevacid solutab/day
dx GERD at 4 weeks
had relatively peaceful 5 months-9.5 months
now regressing, waking 10+ times/night,
not sleeping longer than 1-2 hours,
waiting for bronchitis to go away
docs say secondary reflux b/c of chest infection
Just asked my GI doc the same thing. She recommended the BioGaia. We just finised Biaxin antibiotic for bronchitis yesterday, so i thought i'd give her starting tomorrow. I got a sample from the doc, but it isn't the infant drops..its the straw..and the package says "may contain trace milk protein." Keep that in mind if your little one is sensitive.

Culturelle doesn't have milk or wheat. So for those MSPI kids it's a good choice

Maia's pediatric gastro has us giving her Culturelle Kids every day. In her case she was getting stomach bugs every 2-3 months because she also has oral/motor sensory issues and chews on her hands. I don't know if the Culturelle Kids is helping or not but I figure that it's worth a try. I'm not sure about how to space it from antibiotics, though?? You should ask the gastro about that to be safe IMHO.
