Just when I thought it was over....back on prevacid again
Amalia was weaned off back in August, and about 2 months ago was weaned to regular milk. Was doing great but about three weeks ago started refluxing more than usual during the day, and coughing once in the middle of the night. Suddnely she coughed a lot during the night (threw up all this phlegm) and the very next day broke with a high fever (103), took to pedi and everything was clear. Then 2-3 days later was having what clearly sounded like asthma - no wheezing, but those coughing attacks getting much worse(20-30 minutes long) and you could hear all the phlegm in there- in the middle of the night and eventually during the day. Anyways, took her to urgent care- found bilateral ear infections and doc said not calling it asthma yet (thank God) because it's the first time and he thinks it was a reaction to the bilateral ear infections. Steroids thank God did the trick but really weird- she started refluxing during the day again (did not notice it during those very ill days) so she's back on prevacid. I wonder if the refluxing led to the ear infections? It's just weird, she never had a cold, no runny nose or anything- and she has only had one other ear infection in her life- at 13 months of age. My real question is- what's that vitamin that there is a risk kids on long term H2 blockers may become deficient in? Is it A? Since I don't know how long she is going to need to be on prevacid- I want to start supplementing her now. Thank you so much if you've read this far. God Bless

Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!
Didn't we all decide a long time ago that milk makes you produce more phlegm/mucous? Could the milk be the root of the problem? I don't know about the vitamin.

So sorry you're taking a step back Mely :( Hopefully once she's better she'll be able to come off prev again.

How old is Atalia now? She looks so big :)

MAggie looks real big too! Atalia is still on meds but doing great. I don't think milk is the root of it- since it's been 3 years and we have never had this problem. The doc said she had a lot of inflammation in her bronchioles- a lot of secretions, so it's coming from the lungs. It's a puzzle now to determine if there is reflux, asthma, both..what is causing what. She is starting to cough again...I'm going to have to be observing her closely. Thank you for your reply. God Bless

"about two months ago was weaned to regular milk" - I have to agree with maggiemom - RED FLAG. First, there is a strong connection between milk issues/ear infections, second, a lot of parents figure the child has grown out of their intolerance/allergy to milk, but this might not be the case. However, an older child will usually have different symptoms then an infant. If I were you, I would cut the dairy (or really scale back to maybe just a little in baked items) for a month and see what happens. By the way, Eric FAILED his food trial back in Sept. so we have no safe foods. : ( Take Care, El

Oh blueleopard- I'm so sorry to hear about Eric... This has to be so extremely difficult. I will pray. When is the next test again? Is he going to school already? How are you feeling health wise? And your girls? About the milk- she was weaned from lactose free milk to regular milk- so she has always been on dairy. Could lactose cause those symptoms? Anyways, I put her back on lactose free milk again about a week ago. Thank you so much for your reply. God Bless.

Hi again. Thanks for the prayers, we definately need them. We are all well (even me - never figured it out - maybe stress), outside of Eric. He will be 4 in early March. No school until 5 1/2. It should be fun sending him in with bottles. We are going to start him on a different 5 foods soon & rescope in the winter (after holidays). I hate doing the scopes even more now that he is older and also he seems to be reacting to something in the anastesia (can't spell). As far as the dairy, I think the lactose issue would cause more of a gas/bloating/belly pain problem. Hmmm, can't imagine what it is then. Let us know what happens. El

Opps, forgot to say - I can handle skim milk, but full strenght milk does not agree with me. I had an intol./allergy to milk up until about age 12.

Jordyn 11/30/04 DX GERD at 1month old
I am not sure that this will be much help but I can tell you from expirence that steroids will do a number on the digestive system. Luckily Jordyn has never had to use oral steroids because the allergy asthma Dr has allways been real good about having us increase inhaled steroids at the first sign of illness. I was just on a 2 month stint of oral steroids and they did a number on me even with my Dr telling me to increase pepcid ontop of prevacid. That is something you may want to keep in mind. I know none of us want to add yet another diagnosis to our LO's but if you notice a pattern with the breathing problems you may want to concider the benifit of inhaled steroids over the risk of oral ones. Good luck and I hope Amalia is feeling better soon.

Blueleopard - I am so glad everyone is doing well, including yourself. I really will pray that these next 5 foods will agree with him. You are one strong woman I tell you- and Eric is so blessed to have you as his mom. Well, this is my theory with Amalia- after 2 days on Prevacid, the coughing at night stopped. This is the same thing that happened when I try to wean her at 1 1/2 years of age and at 2- she started coughing at night, and I immediately increased her dose again- and 2 days later it stopped. Now, since she had been off of it so long (2 months), and then got ill, I thought it was something else...I think she was refluxing for about a week at night (and during the day- that I could tell), then the reflux irritated all the airways and led to the phlegm (like when she was little) and the reflux led to the ear infections...There is a corrollation between reflux and asthma (I remember this when I took that childhood asthma course). So although I am little disappointed she is back on the prevacid, I praise God that the medicine did the trick and she is back to her old self- sleeping like a baby and without congestion, no reflux during the day at all. I'll wait until the summer again to try to wean her off. And praise God she is doing well on the low dose (15mg). Now I need to get some vitamins...God Bless!
