rice cereal
Have any of you used rice cereal in LO's bottle to help with reflux? I notice alot of you use Thick it or Simply Thick, but these are not available to me in Canada. My 3-month old DDs ped recommended it and I haven't started yet mostly because i'm scared it'll make her constipated (like Enfamil Thickened did). If you have, can you tell me if it helped with reflux and did you have any problems such as choking or constipation?

adelines mom
we had great luck with simply thick with adeline. started at 4 weeks old. we had really BAD luck with rice cereal! when we started to feed her solids at 7 months, used oatmeal instead. i ordered the simply thick nectar on line and they would ship me a box at a time. we used miralax for the constipation. started that at 8 months. wish we had known about it sooner. still on it at 17 months. made all the difference in the world. twice a day. she was straining so hard she would reflux up through her nose.

Rice cereal made my daughter constipated as well. We switched to oatmeal in th ebottle and it made her have blow outs and a lot of gas. I recommend either making one oatmeal bottle a day, or give her a dose of Mylanta, which helps gas and the acid lining. You could also put a tbsp of pear juice in each formula bottle...I wouldn't do all of those things but those are the things that I have read that works. My daughter gets Mylanta to help her in between Axid dosage, it begins to wear off on her so we give her Mylanta and that makes her go poop. Good luck! Also I would recommend Beech nut rice cereal since it is soy free and it seems much thinner then Gerber. I am able to give my daughter a 3 oz bottle with a little over a tbsp with a 1 nipple which helps slow her feedings down, which is good for reflux babies.

Also mom to Nathan. born Jan.20th, 2009, MPI . so far dx with reflux and has an extremely sensitibe GI system. Also dx with primary immune deficiency disease.
You should be able to buy thick it. I am in Montreal and can buy thick it at any pharmacy. Just ask for it because it ight be behind the counter. I used it for my son, because rice cereal made him irritable. If you still can't find it, let me know and I might be able to mail it to you. HTH

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
We didn't have constipation, but we had some type of made the vomiting way worse...oatmeal helped, but in the end, it didn't do anything for Z. Definitely try rice, but you may want to add Miralax to the bottle, too.

thanks for all the advice! I think i will try the rice cereal this week since it was dr's suggestion. if it doesn't work out i will ask about using thick it. i so hope she doesn't get constipated. it's like trying to fix one problem while creating another. watching her push out those hard poops is worse than dealing with the spit up.
