need some advice...
hi mommys...its been some time since i posted...let me just update u to whats going on with Sarah....its been 1 month and a week since we changed her from axid to prevacid...and let me tell u that shes doing soo much better, shes not spitting up as much as she was and even she dose it dosent seem like it hurts her just a little unconftuable....overall things are alot better now this is where the problem comes in...her last bottle is at 8 or 8:30pm after that she goes to bed she usually wakes up 1 hr after we put her down but if i get to her fast enough and rock her she goes back to sleep till 1 than i give her a bottle and this is where the hell begins she starts crying pushes away from me spits up her pac...and it takes me good 45 min to rock her back to sleep(most of the time at this point she goest back to sleep in my arms and stays there tilkl she wakes up),the next bottle is at 4 and than 6:30 but sometimes after the 4 am bottle she dosent go back to sleep because she starts doing the same thing as after the first feeding....she passes some much gas when im feeding her....now at the 6:30 feeding she has a bm that stinks and recently theres mucus in it...sometimes i need to wake her up because she is crying in her sleep from the disconfort of the gas...like i said she is the happiest baby during the day when shes kicking her legs and passing all the gas..i have tryed all thestuff for gas but i think its the prevacid and now im thinking maybe i should give her 7.5mg in the morning and insted of 7.5 in the evning just give her the axid???? what do u think???? my app with my ped is next week but i dont know if i can make it from not sleeping...did any of u experience this???? thanx for all the responses!!!

Have you done testing for MSPI yet??? That comes to mind first with the mucous in the poo. Prevacaid has trace amounts of *milk* in it. If y9ou are worried about sleep being affected by reflux then moving to Axid may not help. It is a lesser class of reflux med and doesn't work as strong as the PPI Prevacaid.

You can use mylicon gas drops in each bottle to help with gas. It's really safe to use.

I know you said morning and evening for the meds but what times are you giving it and how close to a meal is it being given?

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Read his story for more specifics that just might help you too - Karen
Remind me how old your daughter is...

Some things to consider:

Ryan stuggled with nighttime feeds for awhile. It was as though this stomache went to sleep and then could not process the milk that I put in him. I started putting digestive enzymes in the night time bottle and that solved the issue.

If you think the Prevacid is the issue you can give her both doses of Prevacid in the morning and Axid at night. While I always believed in splitting up the doses my GI and many other believe that once a day... preferable in the morning is best. Perhaps your daughter fits into that catagory.

Have you considered skipping the 1 am bottle? Can you try it for a couple of days and see if she makes up that number of ounces during the day? Perhaps she would be more comfortable and you both would get some sleep if you were getting up to do the 1 am feeding???

What formula is she on? I had to put Ryan on the lactose free similac. That took care of the gas and mucas issues for him

Somethings to think about at try. Remember do one thing at a time... starting with the one that you think is the most obvious. If you do them all you wont know what your silver bullet was.

Best of Luck- Karen

Jeddsmommy... i havent done the MSPI yet we are supposed to do that next week...mylicon drops dont work...i give her the prevacid when she first wakes up or if its time for her feeding than i give it to her 1 1/2hr after that feeding 1/2 before the next and the next one i would give it to her usually at 7:30 pm...the thing is that i dont think its the reflux thats the issue i really think its the gas because as soon as i wake her up and she starts kicking her legs out i can hear her pass the gas and shes happy agian..and before i started giving her the prevacid i though the axid wasent doing that much but now to think about it it did work but not as affective as the prevacid...so im thinking that maybe if i go back on it and now that shes 4 months old maybe it will work better maybe shes getting better i dont know what to think....Karen i dont know if i can skip the 1 am bottle...when she wakes up shes def hungry...but i will try it tonight..shes on enfamil A.R. it with the rice in it..shes on it for about 2 months now i think shes ok with it...i think the mucus was from maalox i did give it to her insted of the milanta...she was on the similac lactose free when she was younger but that didnt do much except give her more gas and she was spitting up like crazy...she was always gassy but the last week is just over the top...like last night, i did give her the axid at 7:30pm bottle at 8 and she went down at 8:20, up at 9 rocked her to sleep but as soon as i put her down she started crying so again rocked her and went to sleep in my arms and the rest just like every other night....now it seems when i gave her the milanta she did settle down a little better but not because of the reflux(i think) but that i helped with her stomach!!!! maybe her stomach is not processing the food i dont know what to think....any other suggestions?!?!?

Has the gas gotten worse these last two months with the A.R.?? Just wondering if the rice is bothering her.

You can use quite of the Mylicon drops. I forget the dosing, it's been sooo long. But I remember being able to use alot of it.

With that much gas, I'd say something is bothering her belly.

Do you "rock" her legs forward towards her chest to help her pass the gas?? We used to have to push pretty hard to help Jedd pass his sometimes.

Hensleigh, 7 months, Prevacid 1/2 tab morning and night. FINALLY better at 2.
Ivy, 6 months, Prevacid 1/2 tab am/pm. Diagnosed 6 weeks.

Have you tried gripe water? I use Colic Calm. My pedi said it was fine to use that in conjunction with the prevacid. I really think it helps - both with the gas and the reflux. They are FDA approved as well. I too have the sleepless nights. I believe that the only other mom's that truly understand your mental state are those with infants with reflux. I always feel better after talking with moms on this site. I wish you the best and some sleep!

I may not be right, but I would bet that the lactose in the Prevacaid is bothering her. I'd bounce it off the GI and see what they have to say. Some Moms here mix their own meds with Caracream with great success. They order it from the Marci website I think.

Jedd just turned 3 years old and he weighs about 32.5lbs. He takes 4.5CCs of Axid a day. That dose gets adjusted per his weight gains. We can see when he needs it adjusted, we start to see hiccups, coughing, ect, all the classic reflux signs. I then put a call in to the GI with a current weight and the nurse calls back with the adjusted dose. We have been seeing our current GI since Jedd was about 7 months old though. We have a GREAT working relationship that I completely cherish. Not all DRs will be that accommodating though. You really need to find a good one and get a good relationship going. That's easier said then done though. :(

In comparison of meds, Jedd was taking Prilosec (compounded suspension to go into his feeding tube) he weighed 12lbs at 6 months and he was taking around 3CCs twice a day. A pretty hefty dose. By the time we weaned him off the Prilosec and to a H2 full time he was taking 6.5ccs twice a day. And we could dose him with mylanta when needed. Can't remember that dose though...LOL

Just remember not to adjust a med until a Ped or GI tells you that they can. I will admit, I have, but it's not the best idea. I only did it for one day to see if it helped, it did, so I called and asked for an adjustment.

thanx Jessica...she actually just woke up after sleeping for1hr and waking up every 10 min and moving her stomach(i put her on top of my stomach so her stomach is facing my stomch) like a worm, side to side...after 1hr of rocking her on top of me i gave up and took her back to the living room she up and happy as can be...but when i put her on the floor on a blanket she did pass gas again..i think it might be the lactose...i know my little one is not as sick as ur baby or other kids on this site but as much as i get use to things something changes again and i have to adjust again...my DH is away i think im just really tired and i wish he was here so at least i wasent alone.... JPSNIFF i have used the colic calm...i stopped using it few weeks ago i think i might start again i have nothing to lose...thanx ladies!!!!!!!!!!!!

My son is going to be 11 months and your daughter sounds so much like him. He always has problems especially at night. I breastfed for 8 months and it was hard to get any sleep. when we had him on nutramigen it did get a little better but anytime we hit teething or illnesses it got worse again. My son was believed to have mpi and it cause all kinds of problems. He would be just uncomfortable a lot of the time and a lot of gas. I remember when he was younger it was a lot worse then now. So I know how you're feeling. Sleep deprivation is the worst part and no one can quite understand it better than the people on this site. It's tested my strength, patience and zapped all my energy somedays. It definitely is an up and down road which makes it so hard. It can be great one day or week and then downhill the next. I hope the ride ends for you soon. It will get better as she gets older though. Hang in there!
