nexium--new here
Hello, This site is fantastic! I have read a few of your stories and am so thankful that my little girl is doing so well---gaining weight and no major problems. I can't even imagine what some of you are going through and my heart goes out to you and your babes. Brooklyn is now 3 months old and has been puking since she was born--approx 40X/day. She does the sour face, hiccups all the time, goes through outfits, bibs and receiving blankets like there's no tomorrow. We take all the 'reflux precautions' (keep upright 30 min after feeding, raise head of crib, etc) Her pediatrician just prescribed Nexium (5mg, once a day) for her to prevent esophageal damage and to ease her discomfort. Just wondering how many of you have used this and was it effective? Did your babes have any side effects? We can't start her until tomorrow night as no pharmacy around here carries the infant dosages and had to special order it in. Dr. also suggested adding rice cereal to her bottles, but I'm not too sure about doing this. We tried using Enfamil Thickened for 1 week and it did not help decrease the amnt she spits up and it made her terribly constipated. It was horrible. I cannot breastfeed due to medical reasons. Anyways, i'm concerned that the rice cereal will constipate her again and won't help the spit up issue. And i'll need to buy special nipples for the rice ceral right? the cross cut ones?

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Read his story for more specifics that just might help you too - Karen
I have used Nexium but there are other mothers on the board who have had very good luck with it. Hopefully they will see your post and respond. If you are concerned about the rice cereal constipating her her can try Simply Thick or Thicken It instead. Those seem to work well for many. You can get them at Walgreens or other pharmacies. You will have to monkey with the nipple size to find one that work best depending on how thick you make it. Start with a 3 before you go to the Y cut since she is so little. It wouldn't hurt to het yourself hooked up with a good Pediatric GI unless you are super comfortable with your Ped's expertise with reflux. - Karen

thanks for the tip with thick it or simply thick. I live in Canada though and these are not available to me. Don't know why...so I'll have to give the rice cereal a shot. i think i'll just start slowly so her belly can get used to digesting it. ???

Mom to Matthew, 01/16/08, GERD baby, has been on Zantac since 2 mos. Aidan, his twin brother, no GERD. Max-ed out on Zantac at 1ml-3 times/day, and switched to Prevacid 15mg split tab 08/20/08. Switched again to 20mg Prilosec 09/18/08 due to Prevacid's restlessness/headache side effects. Reflux was out of control again and had to switch to 10mg Nexium 02/11/09. Good result so far.
My son is doing well on Nexium and didn't have any side effect so far. Rice cereal and even oatmeal cereal was bad for him and made him throw up even more. My son threw up a lot too and still does when he has a cold and hard cough. I know how hard it is to go through it but it will get better with time.

how the nexium working for you little one jillianv? i'm going to start my dd on that tomorrow morning because prevacid isn't doing it for her. i'm hopefully but it's hard to get too hopefully because nothings seems to be working thus far. we are thickening her bottles with simply thick nectar and although it makes her way gassy, it is helping get more food in her tummy. we use 1/2 teaspoon milk of magnesia in her bottle 3x daily to help with the gas and keep her regular.

The Nexium is working very well. She is spitting up alot less (i'd say half as much) and has only 1 screaming episode since starting and it's been a week. She's clearly more comfortable. I really hope that it works well for your little one as well.
