Switching from Prevacid to Nexium?
My 3-month-old was diagnosed with GER at 2 weeks and has been taking Prevacid ever since. The Prevacid helped, but her reflux has been getting worse and worse (more throat/lung congestion, screaming, sleep interruptions, etc), so my pediatrician is switching her to Nexium. Does anyone have any experience with this drug on a baby so small? Also, they told me it's stronger than Prevacid and that I should see improvement within three days; however, the info that came with the prescription says we should see improvement in 4-8 weeks! She is going on her third day, and so far no improvement. (Her reflux was actually worse over the weekend, because we were coming off the Prevacid.) My husband and I are dying for some sleep! She rarely sleeps 2 hours without waking in discomfort. Any advice/support would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Yes, please come back and let me hear more details . . . I see yours has/had silent reflux as well. My first had it, too, but he did fairly well using just the Prevacid. My daughter is currently taking 10 mg once/day, and we are now on her third day. I am disappointed to see no improvement, and of course it's getting bad because the Prevacid has worn off. When did you first see improvement in yours? Silent reflux is so frustrating because it's so difficult to diagnose! Even for the second time around we were doubtful as to what was wrong with her.

Mom to Matthew, 01/16/08, GERD baby, has been on Zantac since 2 mos. Aidan, his twin brother, no GERD. Max-ed out on Zantac at 1ml-3 times/day, and switched to Prevacid 15mg split tab 08/20/08. Switched again to 20mg Prilosec 09/18/08 due to Prevacid's restlessness/headache side effects. Reflux was out of control again and had to switch to 10mg Nexium 02/11/09. Good result so far.
My son switched to Nexium at around 13 months and doing well since then. Prevacid seemed to cause headache in my son case and Prilosec stopped working for some reason. He's 21 month now and still has 10mg daily. I was told that Nexium and Prevacid are in the same class of drug. I saw major improvement within a couple days, especially his sleep got much better when we switched from Prilosec to Nexium.

nexium has been wonderful for us
Hi, my son switched to Nexium after several years on was a wonderful switch.. He was 7 when we switched so he was able to let us know what a difference it made. He has been on it almost years and we have seen a huge difference in his overall health. We also use an additional nighttime med. We started Carafate when he was about 2 and that was also a blessing. Good luck

hi - just wondering how the switch is going? my little girl has been on prevacid for almost two months and i'm not really seeing much improvement. she'll be HORRIBLE for two weeks, then have two good days and then it's back to the horrible :( she has silent reflux as well and will be 4 months old next week. she's on 1.5 ml of compound prevacid, 2x/daily. i'm pretty lost at this point and thickening her feeds doesn't really seem to be helping. her feeding go something like this. glup like crazy for two minutes, starting turning her head side to side, start trashing her head side to side, arch her back, scream out, burp, flip out, crying, screaming, eat her fist, take three blups, thrash around...and so on. very little spitting up. i'm trying to think of anything i can so to help give her relief.

We finally got in to see a specialist, and since the Prevacid had been working for us initially, he wanted her to take a 15 mg tablet in the AM and try 1/2 tsp. of Zantac in the PM. It has worked marvelously! (Zantac alone had not helped.) Apparently the combination of meds often does the trick, so he says. He also said he would be fine with increasing the dosage of Prevacid if we needed it, but we haven't so far. I'm so glad we've finally got this resolved. She now takes a 4-hour nap without me holding her, and this is just amazing! It's so difficlut burping a reflux baby, isn't it? Especially when they're already uncomfortable when they eat, so they swallow extra air, which compounds the problem. I hope things get better for you! I've heard from several other moms that the Prevacid-Zantac combo has done wonders for them, so maybe you should try it! Just be sure to get the Zantac flavored at your pharmacy because it tastes awful.
