zantac dosage question
Ok... so we went back to taking the zantac until my buffer babies comes and I start trying prilosec. Until then, I am going back to the way I dosed her before with the zantac. This is where I admit to not following the doctors orders. I discovered through trial and error that if I broke my daughters zantac dosage up to every 3 hours instead of 6 hours, she did way better. My doctor said "no earlier than every 6 hours. So I switched to that and she started having problems. My thought is that if they metabolize PPI's so much faster, they would be metabolizing the h2 faster too. So if a normal person took it every 6 hours... then a baby could take it every 3. She is definitely doing better today since I started this. I do a total of .6 mls 6xs a day for a total of 3.6 mls. Does anyone think this is bad or has anyone else dosed zantac this way? Does this sound like too much? Any advice would be appreciated. The prevacid just caused her to stop eating again (we tried prevacid once before with the same result).

in my honest opinion, if this dr is not listening to you and your concerns about medicine not working then you may need to find a new dr rather then using medicine experiments on your dd.

sometimes a H2 dose is broken up 3 times a day but it's at the dr's calculation of a correct dose per med time. this is also calculated per weight. there may be certain risks in giving meds against doctors orders.

if it were me i would take my concerns to a second opinion doctor who may be able to see your concerns and treat your dd in a way you feel comfortable.

please seek a doctor or a pharmacist's help before giving otc counter meds like prilosec to your dd. they are otc for adults not formulated for kids.

agree with emibug. We had to go to second opinion to get the right dose of medicine for my son. I would not change meds around without making sure it is ok with a doc. Most all moms on here have had "fight" to get their kiddos on the proper dose of medicine but we only did it with a docs OK.

You can (safely) give Mylanta Cherry Supreme. This may be an option until you can seek a second opinion to give Zantac according to doc and Mylanta in between. Your pharmacist can help you with the dosage for the Mylanta. Many moms on here give that.

Debbie, Mom to:
Derek,10/29/02 GERD,Can't have any legumes(soy, being the worse), allergic to PN/Tree Nuts, struggled to gain weight for years, my "picky" eater,Takes Zegerid. Johnny, 12/05/99 GERD, managed by diet, allergic to cashews/pistachios.
When my 6yr old was younger, his GI doctor had us giving the zantac three times a day, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We used the efferdose tablets, and I just dropped them in his drinks to dissolve. He always said they metabolize quicker and need it in their system more often. I hope you get the prilosec soon, my son did so much better once he was on that, we use the generic to it now. I order it online very cheap. I also agree with the other posts, is their another GI you can go to?

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. You have me support to do what you gotta do to make her comfortable. You know your baby best. I hope you love the Caracream as much as I do. Let me know if you have any questions about it once it arrives.

PS Do you have the prescription form of the Prilosec that is a capsule?? Caracream does not work with the Prilosec OTC that is in pill form.

I talked with my pharmicist about it and she said as long as I was staying under the 60 mg a day limit for her weight, that it would be ok to give it to her every 3 hours. I will say that it does cause her to have lower GI gas that she wakes up with crying from. Anyone ever heard of that? I am having it recompounded without the peppermint flavoring thinking that maybe she is having gas from that. My Ped called me this morning and said he wants to do allergy (RAST) testing before she sees the GI... anyone ever have it done as young as 5 months? I am nervous about starting food because of the MSPI and all the other gas issues but am hoping that when I do start, it will help with her reflux. It seems like the Neocate is so thin and comes up really easily.. I am trying to hold off on solids until 6 months but I am getting ansy. Should I try Oatmeal first or Avocados? My boys started on avocados first but neither of them had reflux or any other allergy problems.... The buffer babies kit says it is ok to use with prilosec OTC????? Haven't decided what to do about starting that yet. I just hate to jerk her system around some more. Especially after the prevacid was such a disaster for her (for the 2nd time).. I am dosing with mylanta as needed but I am having a horrible time finding the cherry supreme kind... any ideas of where to get it?

That is very cool that you can use the caracream with priolosec OTC now. That is new. I will have to check it out. As far as solids go, I waited until Ryan was almost 8 months old. He was such a poor drinker that I was afraid it would get even worse if I filled up on cereal. Every baby is different though so trust your own instints.
