suggestions for adding calories/loss of appetite on Prevacid?
Apologies if this has been posted before. My son is 19 weeks old (14 weeks adjusted age) and has recently begun refusing the bottle to the point where he is only taking in about 20-21 ounces/day. He is not gaining weight, which is a concern since he is on the low scale at 12.5 lbs. The doc has put him on Zantac in addition to the Prevacid he's already taking. We've been referred to a GI. The Prevacid has almost nearly eliminated the vomiting, but his appetite seems to be worse. So I guess my question is two-fold: Has anyone experienced loss of appetite in their LO on Prevacid and Does anyone have a suggestion for adding calories to his feedings?

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
I don't have alot of time ATM but I will post more later.

Jedd's gastric motility was slowed by his need for a high dose of his PPI, Prilosec. We used Erythromycin to aid in the emptying of his stomach to help. Once we found the right balance he did better.

That all said, have you had any testing done for GERD or motility issues???

If you google PPIs and Delayed Gastric Emptying you will find articles written about this very topic.

Will be back later to add more to this for you. :-)

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Read his story for more specifics that just might help you too - Karen
Call you ped. They will tell you how to mix your formula to 26 cal vs the 20 cal. Or if you are BF you can pump and they can tell you how much formula to add to the breast milk.

thanks
thanks. yeah, i have called the ped. now just have to wait 72 hours or so for an answer. :) this ped prescribed zantac in addition to the prevacid he's already taking. for some reason, i'm doubtful the combo will work, but we'll try it anyway. hopeful we can get in to see the GI soon.

My experience with prevacid has been similar. Sheis almost 5 months and is a little over 13 lbs. My daughter was put on prevacid for her silent reflux and she slowly just quit eating. She was on good start soy formula. Long story made short is that we ended up in the hospital for 5 days for dehydration and tests. They discovered that she is milk and soy protein intolerent and the good start was aggravating the reflux. However, I am still convinced that the prevacid made her sick. We were taking the solutabs (which has milk in them). After she was put on Neocate things did get better. She is still not a huge eater but she does ok. She was on Zantac for about 2 months. Similar to many others, she built up a resistance and it is no longer working. So we are now back to prevacid. This time we are taking the capsules and breaking them open. We give these to her with a little pear juice in a syringe. ( Don't use water.. it is alkaline and it will break the enteric coated beads down before they can be absorbed.. the acid in the juice helps preserve them). I am thinking of giving the buffer babies and prilosec a trial run and see if she does better on this. The prevacid also seems to give her lower intestinal gas. Like everything, I am going to give it 2 weeks. That seems to be the magic time frame. Hang in there and look into a milk/soy intolerance... it could be part of his eating problem.

In case you were wondering.. I love love love the Caracream. I mix it with the prevacid capusules. With in one week of switching to Caracream Ryan was a new man. Kicking myself for not getting it sooner. He didnt even need the really high dose of Prevacid after that because ALL of the meds were getting in him with the Caracream. We have started the wean down process and it is going very well.

Thanks for your input, 3l's. I do think that formula may be part of the problem. We had him on milk-based formula during his first couple of months of life and he had lots of gas and fussiness on that. He seems to be doing ok on the GoodStart, but the Prevacid may be reducing the gas. We started the Prevacid and switched to GoodStart (from Nutramigen) on the same day, so it's hard to tell which is the culprit. I definitely think a switch back to a hypoallergenic formula is in order. I will ask the GI specialist which one he would recommend. We actually have a compounding pharmacy here and they make a grape-flavored liquid form of the drug. I don't know if that has milk in it or not. It's day 2 on Zantac in addition to the Prevacid and we're not seeing any difference. Going to see the GI specialist on Tuesday morning.
