Six months old - tried to take off Zantac
My pediatrician told me since my son who is six months old is eating cereals, etc. that now would be a good time to try taking him off Zantac. I did, but within less than a week, he was girgling milk bubbles, coughing, restless - I've called to get a refill, but wonder how long this might go on...

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
something like 90% of kids grow out of it by one year...then there's my kid...refluxing up a storm at 2...fun! Get him back on the zantac if it's helping him...seriously...my son has been on those meds for MUCH longer and they have saved his esophagus...SAVED it.

I will get him back on. I'll do whatever I need to make him comfortable. It was so sad when he was hurting and crying - don't want to go back to that.

Don't beat yourself up...everyone here has tried a wean at some point and it's failed. We are in the middle of one right now...don't be too afraid to leave your child on the Zantac for as long as he needs it...

last night I was back to sleeping upright and holding him so he wouldn't girgle and cough.... definite flashback to several months ago... I'll keep him on the med as long as needed. Thanks!

Child with complete constipation making GERD worse.
Axid and Prevacid? complete constipation
Hi Guys I am have a 9 wk old on prevacid for a week now and was using the Axid once at night to get us throught period until the prevacid kicked in. Is it OK to take the two together? I just did it since we got the prevacid prescribed but I realized it takes 2 weeks to work. Also, the child cannot poo at all and I have to use the rectal themometer every day. Has anyone heard of this? She has wet farts so we know it is not blocked completely but besides doing the themometer to months, has anyone seen this before. She is BFed so not a formula issue. Also, we have done the prunes and miralax for me. Help

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
You know, I will never understand why DR push to do med weans soo early. If everything is hunky dory, then it's probably due TO the meds and not that the child has out grown the reflux.

Jedd has still not outgrown his and needs his meds upped whenever he gains enough weight. We have been able to wean from a PPI to an H2Blocker. Jedd uses Axid though not Zantac. We did a trial of Zantac because it's way WAY cheaper, but it didn't work well for him at all.

I'd keep the meds up for a while longer. Just my 2 cents. Jedd's almost 3 and takes his twice a day still.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!

Constipation is just one more thing to add to this fun time. My dd has chronic "functional" constipation since 10 days old. We did Miralax, lactulose, rectal stimulation, every 2 days Babylax to clean her out...etc for months. What finally got her going is the combination of daily prunes, diluted apple or pear juice, a magnesium supplelement, and probiotics.

The type of constipation your little one has is not a fun one. It pretty much means the solid waste is blocked and only liquid and air can get out. This can lead to a condition called Megacolon. Has your little one been checked for Hirschsprung's?

I'd ask your MD or pharmacist if they recommend doing an enema like Fleet Babylax to clean out, and see if they recommend Milk of Magnesia or an Mg supplement. Probiotics are up to you - they're not Rx'd. BTW, a side effect of Prevacid is constipation and/or diarrhea. *sigh* can't win on this one. Abdominal massage can help, but only to a point. Good luck! We still are battling the constipation monster, but have it much more under control and she now actually responds to Miralax, when she didn't for months. It gets better.

I also agree on getting him back on meds. My dd's was a mild case of reflux which required a PPI and an H2 blocker until 16 months of age.
