Elecare / Formula Advice
We finally got Nathan (16 months old) into the Ped GI Specialist for his reflux this week. We now think he has an allergy to milk and soy. He referred us to a nutritionist who saw us this morning, and prescribed Elecare since he's really underweight. I had been giving Nathan Enriched Rice Milk. I tried the Elecare and he spit it further than I thought possible! There is no way I'm getting 32 oz/day into my picky refluxer. It took everything I had to get 16 oz/day of the rice milk in him, and that tasted good! Any advice on how to maybe flavor or disguise the Elecare so he'll take it? Or is there another brand or type I should ask the nutritionist about that would taste better? Any advice would be appreciated.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
I think there are flavorings you can add to it, or they come flavored. I'd check the manufacturer website and maybe ask for some samples. I think you may be able to use something like nesquick, but I'd ask the MD before doing that. Oh, and as for the 32 oz/day, my dd would eat 20-22 if I was lucky, and she's fine. Don't sweat the small stuff, and just know that they will eventually eat something....even if it's not today!

Kathryn, Pager Volunteer and mommy to Emily Mia 02/04/07. 3 years old with GERD. 30mg Prevacid and Pepcid AC. Mylanta needed for flares. Failed prilosec med switch. Tried and failed many med weans but GERD and pain are well controlled. Functional constipation. Reoccurring SBBO. Suspected IBD or autoimmune disease. Resolved issues: MSPI, CSID (acquired), Stage 2 kidney reflux, Chronic diarrhea.
Audrey Meadow 06/20/08. born 34/35 weeks. Still b/f and eats everything! ftt and chronic constipation.
there are flavor packets that neocate offers that are hypoallergenic, i think there are some commercial syrup flavors (like for slushies; monin is a good brand) that are milk/ soy free too, some even come in sugar free. have you ever added doucal? this gives extra calories to what he will drink. Elecare has a Elecare Vanilla brand that might be more tolerable to a todder but if not you might want to consider asking about neocate Eo28 splash good luck!

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
Your son should be on the Elecare vanilla because he is over one year...and it tastes like a vanilla's WAY better than the rotten potato smell of regular Elecare
Check with your
doctor first!
