Daughter Payton, Born 4/2/09, Diagnosed with Silent Reflux at 3 Weeks. Tried zantac, prevacid, axid, multiple formula changes. Presumed MSPI. On Elecare and Carafate.
Reflux or Allergies or Asthma
I took Payton to her pediatrician yesterday because she has a persistent cough at night which began when she was hospitalized a month ago due to a repiratory infection. I've been giving her breathing treatments (xopenex), but they don't always help. The dr says her lung are "clean as a bell", but I do think she's wheezing at night too. He thinks this is allergies or reflux acting up. At 4 1/2 months old, he won't prescribe claritin (he says she must be at least 6 months old). I think her reflux is under control right now with elecare and carafate, unless the coughing is a new symptom of reflux. He tells me "sorry, but this is something you are going to have to live with & we can see if she is still the same at 6 months old & then try claritin". Ugh! What can I do to help my baby RIGHT now? Any suggestions most appreciated. BTW, I have asthma & am worried that she has it or will have it too.

Mom to Jasmine aka: Jazz 01/24/2007
Dx with silent reflux at 8 months
FPIES, DGE, MSPI. Recently diagnosed with EC (Eosin. colitis and now Primary immune deficiency disease.
Also mom to Nathan. born Jan.20th, 2009, MPI . so far dx with reflux and has an extremely sensitibe GI system. Also dx with primary immune deficiency disease.
I am a bit relutant to say this, but when Nate was wheezing and coughing at night, we put him on his belly to sleep and it started to diappear after several days. I would still get a seond opinion if you can, or videotape her at night? ould you ath the wheezing on tape do you think?

You also never have to live with anything that you don't like. If this MD won't help, go on to the next and the next...... HUGS

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
Z had a chronic cough until very recently...we did breathing treatements with no improvement either...allergy testing was pretty negative...GI chalked it up to reflux..all the liquid moving around makes him "juicy" all the time. The elecare helps wiht allergies and the carafate helps coat everything, but neither STOP the reflux..just make it less painful...so there is still liquid moving around. My son is 22 months now and in the last couple months stopped sounding sick all the time (he has a pretty severe case of reflux, though...since birth...he's yet to outgrow it, but it's better)...just FYI my son is rarely *sick*...just always sounded like he had a cold.

Mom to Charlie - cleft palate and reflux. Meds - zantac, prevacid, mylanta and reglan.
We are in the same boat as Zack and his mom. For a very long time Charlie sounded like he had a cold or a very bad smoking habit. He just had a nasty cough. We even did nebulizer treatments. When the weather got better it cleared up and along with it, the vomiting really improved. (He also started walking and generally got stronger). But then he got a cold 2 weeks ago and we are back where we were before. We are going to the pulmo tomorrow but with these coughs, there is not a lot they can do. Agree early morning is bad!

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Read his story for more specifics that just might help you too - Karen
Sounds just like what Ryan sounded like. Claritin put an end to it. Perhaps in the next 2 months you could run a humidifier in her room at night. I know that sounds aweful this time of year, but it really helped Ryan. - Karen

It sure seems like allergies or a cold and not reflux....she's now got a runny nose & some congestion, too. I got the cool mist vaporizer going last night & it seemed to help. I also took my mother's advice and tried vick's vapor rub. Anyway, she coughed a whole lot less last night. A co-worked recommended "Johnson's Soothing Vapor Bath", which I am going to try this evening, we'll see. I was wondering if anyone had a doctor willing to prescribe claritin for a child under 6 months old or was my dr's response pretty standard?

Have you asked your Ped about switching to a controller like Pulmacort? Xopenex and albuterol never did much for my son, but the switch to Pulmacort stopped the night-time coughing after about a week. Maybe you could request to see an allergy-asthma specialist? Also, I started putting him to sleep in his carseat. The upright position helped at night. Good luck, I hope Payton feels better and you get some sleep.
Check with your
doctor first!
