Mom to Charlie - cleft palate and reflux. Meds - zantac, prevacid, mylanta and reglan.
Coughing and strange grunting noise - dr visit needed?
Hi - Charlie was sick a couple of weeks ago. Nothing big, slight temp with a cough. Pedi thought it was a bad cold and he was back to normal in a few days. He still has a harsh cough from time to time, mostly a dry cough. He also makes this strange grunting noise like he is swallowing but he makes a grunting sound. That is all new - never heard it before. Both are particularly bad after he vomits or if he works himself up crying. His vomiting has improved a lot lately, he can go days without vomiting but that has fallen by the wayside since he was sick. More like every other day now. Some are giant barfs, some are little spitups. Question for the group - do you think he needs to see the pedi for a chest check or something? Otherwise he has no symptoms so he seems fine. I am also wondering if the humidity is a factor - we live in NJ and the heat an humidity are kicking in big time.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
It sounds like your ds has perhaps started a transition to silent reflux. The dry cough I wouldn't worry about much, unless there's a hx of pneumonia. Coughs take a while to get rid of. Sometimes the cough can arise from a reflux flare as well, which usually happens with an illness. When in doubt, always call the MD to be sure though.

Hey Susie!! Holden is making that transition to silent reflux as well and I had to take him in today b/c he was choking. Have you done any nebs with him with this cough?? He could have some inflammation from microaspiration or it could just be the weather which can aggrevate things big time. If in doubt it doesn't hurt to have them listen to him with a stethescope. How are you feeling these days? Hope you and Charlie get relief from this soon.

Hi Tracy - no nebs yet. My husband is taking him to the pulmo on Friday. I suspect we will be on albuterol at a minimum after the visit. It will be interesting to hear how his chest is. It has been crystal clear for so long now but I wouldn't be surprised if he has aspirated a bit. ON a different note, I should be going in to have the new baby in 5 weeks. It feels overwhelming sometimes b/c Charlie is 21 months but in a lot of ways like having a much younger child. Fortunately I get 16 weeks maternity leave so hoping he progresses while I am off!
