sleep deprivation and teething getting to me
Kody is starting, I think, to cut 2 more teeth. He's starting to refuse bfing or bottles again. He's completely fussy, his reflux is worse and he won't sleep. Well he never sleeps, I mean NEVER sleeps. I'm so exhausted and just lost it today. He fought taking a nap for 2 hours today. Finally passed out and slept for an hour. How does anyone deal with the sleep or lack thereof? How do I give him some relief so we can get a few extra hours of sleep? This is what's going on. He will sleep for no more than one hour. It doesn't matter if he's in our arms, in his bed, in our bed. He's so uncomfortable. He's on compounded prilosec 3 ml twice a day. He's also on ees 3 x's a day on .44 ml. I want him on a different ppi but the gi is convinced that the prilosec is cutting out 90% of his acid. Kody will be getting a scope in Sept. But I'm having trouble already dealing with this. We've been giving him mylanta at night. He's also on lactulose for constipation. Ugh! I was really feeling sorry for myself today and it just exhausts me to think that all these meds and nothing is working right now. Frustrated again. I'm hoping for new ideas to help deal with this lack of sleep. Any insight on how we can get some sleep. I feel like I've tried everything but maybe someone has something else. This is what we've done. Keeping him on our chest (not comfortable for me), carseat, 40 deg angle in crib, in bed with us, keeping him upright after eating, giving mylanta ( some relief but not long), and gas drops. Anything else we can try? Thanks!

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
Teething is such a pain in the neck. My dd has teethed consistenly since 3 months old (and still isn't done at nearly 2.) I know I keep preaching the Mg supplement, but I never can recall whom I've said it to. It worked okay for my dd, but she never learned to sleep until recently. I really notice if we've forgotten to give her the Mg that day. It helps tremendously with constipation and at least helping to calm the little ones. Lactulose only helped slightly for Allie - we were on it for 9 months.

Also, check those ears and throat. Teething just makes everything hurt, and not much will soothe them. Even if there's no infection, I'd ask the MD if there are any pain drops you can do for the ears - we have one called ob-otic or something, but it's not often rx'd anymore (older drug). It's just for ear pain. There are also homeopathic remedies for teething pain, earache, etc but I'd talk to a holistic practioner or pharm before you add anything else to the mix. You can try to rub some children's benadryl on the gums - the antihistamine works as an anti-inflammatory.

Is he to big to swaddle, even halfway? We also used to cuddle her on our chests, on the couch, with a hot watter bottle between us and her. It was at least relaxing and helped with the gas pains for her.

The only other thing I can think of is to see if ANYONE would be willing to take him for you for a few hours. You need to sleep, otherwise you're no use to anyone, especially yourself. My hubby and I took shifts at first (he'd take first half of the night, then I'd take over around 3 am so he could go to work somewhat rested.) It wasn't heaven, but I could close the door and muffle some of the screaming. Friends of ours took her overnight once when we were surviving on an hour a night (if we were lucky) for over 3 months. It seems so much to ask of anyone, especially when you're hading them a 2 page long list of feedings and meds for a few hours. Maybe even try a mom's morning out type of place? I know many churches have them, even if you're not a member many times they'll take them.

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. I am so sorry you guys are going through this again. You barely got a chance to catch your breath from the last epsode. Teething is a deal breaker for reflux and you are also at the worst age for reflux... it was for us anyway. We hit the bottom at 8 to 9 months. Some thoughts...

1. Call your ped and ask for Prevacid solutab samples. It does not hurt to try something else.

2. Take turns with your husband. He takes one night, you take the next night. At least you will get some sleep every other night. Wear earplugs if you have to. You are no good to anyone if you are sleep deprived and strung out.

3. Call in the calvery. If you dont have family in town, call your church and ask if there are any retired women that would be willing to come over for a couple of hours to give you relief. You would be amazed at how good the grandma types are calming these babies and they have oodles of patience. They love nothing more than to hold little ones. Get out of the house with your daughter and do some school shopping with her. It will do you both a world of good.

4. Yo Baby yogurt was one thing that Ryan ate well when he was in pain. Soothing I suppose.

5.The Fisher Price Soothing Motion Glider was our savior. No matter what Ryan was going through he would sleep in that. I still use it today, sometimes. I put him in there if he falls asleep too soon after eatingm if he has a cold or is teething. Perfect angle and it moves side to side. Motion was key for him. If he was moving, he was sleeping.

6. Get yourself and him out of the house, no matter how tired you are. You guys need a change of scenery He just might fall asleep in the stroller for you and you might feel human again.

Ok, that is all I can think of for now. We are all here for you!!

Kathryn, Pager Volunteer and mommy to Emily Mia 02/04/07. 3 years old with GERD. 30mg Prevacid and Pepcid AC. Mylanta needed for flares. Failed prilosec med switch. Tried and failed many med weans but GERD and pain are well controlled. Functional constipation. Reoccurring SBBO. Suspected IBD or autoimmune disease. Resolved issues: MSPI, CSID (acquired), Stage 2 kidney reflux, Chronic diarrhea.
Audrey Meadow 06/20/08. born 34/35 weeks. Still b/f and eats everything! ftt and chronic constipation.
you might ask about trying something else for constipation. Lactulose was horrible for audrey. it caused her extremely painful gas and cramps which is very common in that type of medicine b/c it causes and osmotic pulling water to the colon with an undigestable sugar. have you tried anything else like mirilax or milk of mag? just a thought. we are still having problems with getting audrey to sleep through the night and she's 13 months and no reflux. have you tried a swing? teething tabs? or motrin?

I totally agree with switching to Milk of Mag. It worked great for Ryan with no side effects. How much Mylanta are you giving him in a day? If is the the aluminum free kind that will get him going too just like the Milk of Mag will plus it has the anti gas and antacid in it too. If it were me I would do that instead of the lactulose. I tried the MG suppliment at the advice of slimfast mom. That worked great too. I put it in his juice. I used the brand Baby Calm . In fact I used it on myself too during the tough days. No I didnt have constipation.... I used it for the calming affect and it worked awesome!! Kicked my headaches too. I found that when Ryan was not doing well, I would stop eating too and would get nasty nausea and headaches from the stress and lack of food. The Baby Calm took care of both of them till Ryan was doing better and I could start eating decently again. I guess that is one postive out of this reflux mess.... I am back to my highschool graduation weight. I am sure that too will pass. : ) Chin up sister, we are here for you. You are at the lowest point of the reflux which means you have no where to go but up. Its going to start getting better for Kody very soon. - Karen

Interested in knowing where I can get the magnesium supplement? Do I have to order it online or can I find it at the store? I want to try this. It's worth a shot.

I used Baby Calm. http://www.petergillham.com/ I got mine at Campbells Nutrition. Not sure if they are in your city but likely you have a health food store near you. Likely they carry it.

Some pharmacies that offer holistic medicine or homeopathic remedies will often carry a liquid form of Mg. We got ours from Medicap (this is a small national chain in the US) but you could probably get a tincture of Mg online through just about anywhere that sells vitamins and minerals.

We just started using the Calm product with our four year old. I don't know if it was a coincidence or not but the first day after we gave it to her was the first fit free day we had had in a long time. I fully intend to keep using it. Be careful to get just the one with magnesium if you have an issue with constipation because the one with the calcium added might aggravate the constipation. Mag alone is good for loosening the stools. My daughter gets plenty of calcium so I wasn't concerned about that.

I'm going to have order the baby calm online but I saw the kid formula as well. My daughter has chronic constipation and is always moody so I'm wanting to try to see if this will help her. Should I just order the baby calm and give that one to her? She's ten in September. I hate spending so much money on it but I'll try just about anything once for some change. If it doesn't work no harm done. Any input on the two formulas would be greatly appreciated? And how long does a bottle last for anyone?

The Baby Calm bottle says that it is a 2 1/2 month supply. Only difference between the kid and Baby is the amount of Mg in it. If it were me I would get the baby one so you can try it with Kody too. If it doesnt work for him put it does your daughter you are not out anything. I have used the baby one for myself. I just used a 1/2 tsp instead of 1/4 tsp.

Thanks Karen! I'm going to order it sometime today. I sure hope it works because it's $20 for the bottle. I can't find it anywhere around here though. I need to do something for him because he's still not doing well. He's at least eating better now so that's a good thing. He's still not sleeping well at all. I also can't find the mylants cherry supreme so we've been still using the regular mylanta.

The gi called yesterday to give us an earlier appt so now we go in two weeks. His teeth still aren't through, ugh. The ped said ears were fine so he's tugging at them maybe because of teeth. She gave us some eardrops though for the pain. He's a little happier today and seems to be eating and drinking better. Still no sleep for us though. He's even stubborn about naps. He's also getting ready to crawl, yeah. Need to start babyproofing. I'm definitely busy this week. And I thought I would be bored when my daughter went back to school. ha ha. Not a chance. lol

I am so glad to hear that he is at least eating and drinking better. That makes a huge difference in the mom stress level. I am bound and detirmined to figure how to get him to sleep for you though. As far as the Mylanta goes, I couldnt find the Cherry Supreme here either. I went to ever ystore I could think of. I finally said something to my niece who works at a pharmacy. She order it and it was in the next day. I guess I should have asked sooner. I loved it because I could a higher dose than the regular Mylanta, I could give him a tsp at night, and it fixed the constipation issue as well as the night time acid issue. Ask your pharmacist. I bet they can get it for you too. If not let me know and I will send you a bottle.

I am really loving the Prevacid mixed with the Therasol and Caracream from Marci-kids. So glad I made the switch. I can totally tell that his pain is gone. Plus this is the first set of teeth that he has gotten that he has not gone on a drinking strike and didnt get a canker sore or red raw throat. Now that is progress! Yeah Caracream!!

Does Kody wake up super congested and mucosy in the morning?
