Increase Prevacid?
My son is 12 months old. He weighs 24 pounds. He takes a 15mg Solutab nightly. I think the meds are starting to become ineffective. His Sandifer's symptoms have been getting worse over the past 4 weeks. Then we tried to ween him and of course that was a bad idea (Thanks alot Mr. Pediatrician). The Pedi says 15mg is the highest dose. So I am wondering what is done for kids who have severe reflux? Can I get the dose increased?

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
lots of kids take 30, but MANY peds and GI's won't do it (mine included) I tried it against medical advice didn't work for my son, but it's worth asking about. Go to and print out some info. According to them prevacoid and other PPI's have a much shorter half life in kids so they metabolize faster and the child actually needs MORE than a normal adult. They reccomend 30. It's worth a shot. Good luck.

Mom to Charlie - cleft palate and reflux. Meds - zantac, prevacid, mylanta and reglan.
My son is only 21 lbs and his dose is 15mg in the morning and 7.5mg at night. We have been on that dose officially for months, since he weighed maybe 16 lbs. Sometimes I get lazy and give him 15 mg at night (pill splitting is a drag at 11PM) and he tolerates it fine. So given your son's weight I would say he could definitely use an increased dose. Do you see a ped GI? They would probably have a more informed view of this vs. a regular pedi.

My kiddos been on 30 since he was 41/2 months old. Our new GI says that too much Prevacid can cause loss of appetite as a side effect and since his scope showed no damage he is bumping us back down to 15mg with Maalox for breakthrough. I don't think the 15 mg is enough now so we will see what he says when we go back in August. I do know that some moms whose docs are willing to prescribe more Prevacid will have the doc add in an H2 blocker in addition to the Pevacid. Like Prevacid AM and H2 PM or Prevacid split with H2 mid day. Most docs are willing to try this. Good luck.
