My son turned 12 months last week. The doctor said, again, we should try to ween him. So the last 2 nights he has had a reduced dose. Today he has started vomiting after meals. Is it too soon to assume it is the reduced Prevacid that caused this?

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
I went by pain symptoms. Luckily our vomit days were few by 12 months, so I just watched for arching, irritability, sleep disturbances (though those are still here, it's not reflux), etc. But on the other hand, if he's still vomiting, it may not be a bad idea to keep him on it since the acid can still come up when the PPI wears off. I'd call the MD and ask about perhaps adding in a H2 blocker for the wean off the PPI, then work on weaning off the H2 when the vomiting slows down.

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Read his story for more specifics that just might help you too - Karen
I was told the LES doesnt fully close till 18 months so I am waiting till then. Just a thought..

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site:
I have no idea why Drs push to wean by 12 months. Many kids need meds longer than that. I'd def. keep a close close eye on this and if you feel any tiny inkling that you need to restart meds, I would.

We did a wean from a PPI to an H2 blocker slowly. We started with one dose of a PPI and one of an H2 per day. then we went full on with an H2. The whole process took probably about 4 months or so. Jedd now takes 3.5cc twice a day of Axid.

We tried to go to Zantac to save money and it was a NO go, his symptoms got way worse.

Check with your
doctor first!
