refusing liquids
Kody is 7 months now and has been eating solids for me for a little while now. His intake of things got bette for about a week with ees and prilosec. Now the ees isn't working for him. He's really irritable. I am now dealing with him not wanting to breastfeed and he also will start eating from a bottle only to start screaming. His intake for breastfeeding or formula is low. I can't get him to breastfeed for more then a few minutes on one side and then no more than 3 ounces of formula or breastmilk in a bottle. I haven't had this problem before so I don't know what to do. He'll eat solids but I don't want him to do that without the liquid intake. He's been having a time with teething but they broke through and he's still not wanting to take liquids. His reflux is out of control right now but my gi said absolutely no to carafate. He wouldn't even prescribe me levison drops for the gas. He said do mylicon which I said does nothing for him. He's on mylanta which helps for a little while. They almost were going to switch me over to prevacid but the gi said oh the prilosec takes care of 90% of the acid. This is why we're trying to debate the whole another opinion.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on what I can do? I was thinking ear infection but no fever and he slept better last night. So frustrated and don't know what to do. Help!!

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Oh dear! I know exactly how you feel. I have been down this road too many times with Ryan. He has been in the ER 3 times since Jan for fluids. Each time is started with teething, reflux out of control, red raw throat, lost voice, then refusal to drink, even in his sleep. I feel for you! Each time they would give him an IV, give me a prescription for Tylenol with codine (which I used only if I absolutely had to) and then had me mix 1 ml of benadryl with 1 ml of maalox, quirt it at the front of his mouth so he had to work it around to swallow it, wait 10 minutes then try to get him to drink. I did that every 4 hours while he was awake for a couple of days. It worked fairly well. The benadryl/maalox mix is called Magic Mouthwash. You can ask your pharmacist. It is suppose to take the burn out of the mouth and throat. He didnt drink like a champ but he drank enough to keep him from getting dehydrated. I also made runny cereal and added pedialyte with stage 2 foods and spooned it too him. Speaking of will he drink pedialyte for you. It is a little easier on their throats than milk. I am so sorry you are going through this. Makes me anxious just thinking about it. Uhg... Hang in there. I will check this site often to see if you need anything.

acckk! benadryl and maloxx helped him?! well that good! i take that combo all the time for mouth ulcers and it burns my throat so bad, even after it leaves a weird sensation in my mouth- but it makes the ulcers hurt less.

have you ever read what levsin drops are for? http://www.pdrhealth.com/drugs/rx/rx-mono.aspx?contentFileName=Lev1223.html&contentName=Levsin&contentId=302 they are not primarily for gas. i don't want you to think i am being mean or down playing kody's pain, i really don't! but levsin is a serious medication, so don't feel too disappointed they didn't prescribe it.

If you get Maximum Strength Mylanta it has anti gas meds in it. it is the same stuff that is in mylicon except more of it.

i have found out ear infections don't have to have fevers, so that is a consideration, and teething.. well as much as i HATED hearing that option (almost as much as i hated hearing the word colic!) it is a fact of infant reflux that teething makes it worse. have you tried oral gel, teething tablets or tylenol? The hormones involved in teething can stick around for a little while causing reflux to flare even after teeth have popped through.

Make sure you watch his signs of dehydration and look for lethargy and pedialyte or juice and water is a good option, syringe it if you have to!

you can always call the on call pedi or GI to make sure kody is in the best care *hugs* i hope tonight is better!

Karen- You're so sweet. I know how much trouble you've had with Ryan dealing with the drinking strikes. It's so totally new to me. That magic mouthwash sounds so yucky but I'm glad that it worked. I'm praying that he does better today on drinking. He bf before bed last night and then woke up at 12:30 to eat and then again at 6. Then he ate again at 8. So I'm hoping that he continues to catch up today. He's still fussy and his reflux is bad. I def know who to call if it gets worse. I'll try some of your tricks first.

Kat-I had never investigated levison drops before. Thre ped prescribed them when Kody was getting over rotovirus and his pains were so bad. I guess I'm glad we go to a gi now. The label on it always made me nervous with side effects. I think it is his teeth. I just never imagined it would cause this many issues with his reflux. I mean I read about it but until you see it, wow. Thanks!

I am so glad to hear that he is drinking for you!! Isnt that a huge relief? Amazing how good it can make you feel to see them drinking again. We are all going to have a have a mini reunion in about 18 years to talk about this drinking thing. : ) Keep us posted on how he is doing. We are all here for you. PS the benadryl and Maalox actually doesnt taste too bad. I tried it once just to see. hee hee. He would open up wide for it because he new relief was on its way. : ) They figure things out pretty quick.
