Tired of it already
Kody is sliding back to the night time uncomfortableness. He's so gassy at night and crying. If he doesn't get to eat then it's worse so I have to feed him. He then has reflux episodes that I hear when he's in our bed and then he wakes up fussing and moaning again. It's been slowly getting worse over the last few days. He's also been having some very firm stools and wasn't eating all that great yesterday. We go through this every couple weeks it seems. We'll have a really good week and then wham we'll be back to him refluxing bad and not sleeping.

I also have a question about some gas issues that he's having. He seems to be dealing with a lot of gas at night especially. I'm pretty sure that's what's waking him up. He's so uncomfortable. Does anyone have this problem? He has gas during the day but I guess when he's active it doesn't bother him. We gave him mylanta and it seemed to calm him down. The problem being he wants to eat when this happens which causes a vicious cycle. I don't know why he does this and then gets better for a while. He also has dge but rarely pukes. He's always been a silent refluxer and it's really bad right now. I just wish I could figure this all out. Mostly wanting to vent because I'm sitting here being tired from another bad night. Gotta go Kody is waking up from nap! Thanks for letting me vent!

Daughter Payton, Born 4/2/09, Diagnosed with Silent Reflux at 3 Weeks. Tried zantac, prevacid, axid, multiple formula changes. Presumed MSPI. On Elecare and Carafate.
Hi Mommy2k - I am pretty new to the forum myself, and motherhood. Kody's picture is so adorable! Gosh it is discouraging when you go through the "It's getting better, maybe we've got the problem licked now!" to "oh boy was last night bad, how do I get back to where we were"! Fwiw, Payton is doing much better on Elecare, along with carafate. She's MSPI (we think), so we went to Elecare, but the gas pains didn't get better until we added carafate, which she's only been on a couple of weeks. Just like Kody, she seemed to have some nominal relief with mylanta, then wanted to eat more than "normal", then had increased gas pains, etc. We first tried nutramigen and allimentum formulas, but she hated them (and still had the gas issue), and the ped GI recommended an elemental formula for us, and subsequently prescribed the carafate.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
I forget if you're BF or formula, or if you're thickening the formula, but if choking isn't an issue, can you start to water down the night feeds? It may help with the firm stools and be less for his tummy to process at night. I found my dd would want to feed more with the gas because activiating the GI tract helps it to pass, but it makes the reflux worse at night sometimes.

Just a note, about 4 months to 8 months seems to be the toughest for reflux, though it can be later for the ones who have silent. The gas sometimes is from the PPI - can be a side effect.

I'm not making much sense...too tired ;-) so I'll stop before I confuse anyone!

Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
carafate sounds like a great idea. i had always wished they would prescribe it for katie.

Hi Mommy2K, Sorry to hear things aren't so wonderful right now... Constipation has been said to possibly cause reflux to worsen, you may want to ask your ped about what you could do to help tht along, if there's anything you could give. Also see if Kody is old enough to take an anti gas med for babies which might give him some relief as well. My son is older but I remember hearing those silent reluxes at night, I hope he's feeling better soon...Good luck!

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Read his story for more specifics that just might help you too - Karen
Have you tried giving him Mylanta Cherry Supreme before bed? It is aluminum free, just magnesioum, calcium and anti gas. I started giving it to Ryan 3 weeks ago and have seen a big improvement. He is finally having normal bms which helps a ton with the motility and his appetite, works great on the acid and the gas. Since there is no aluminum it is so safe to use. I give Ryan 3/4 to 1 tsp at 10:30 pm. It is worth a try for you. It can be a little hard to find though. Seems like it is hit and miss on what stores carry what type of Mylanta. My pharmacist just startedgetting it for me. http://www.mylanta.com/mylanta-supreme. It is OTC though so you dont need a prescription.

Thanks everyone! I think Kody is cutting another tooth so that might explain a little of why his reflux is worse especially at night. But I did put a call into the gi to see if we could get carafate prescribed. He's been so irritable during the day and night especially after he bf. Choking a lot. I can't seem to get it under control right now. I'm hoping that we get him feeling better soon because I really don't want to go down the same road again. It's been so manageable the last few weeks and then we hit this great big bump in the road. So frustrating.

Well he's finally having softer stools but still is refluxing bad. He's not wanting to really nurse very much either but that might be from teething. It's so confusing to figure it all out. I know that this too shall pass.

Levsin Drops -- forgot to mention
Besides the carafate, we also have a perscription for Levsin drops. If carafate is like "super mylanta", then the Levsin drops are like "super mylicon". I ususally give Payton just regular mylicon before each bottle, and only give the Levsin when she is having a screaming fit of gas, but the perscription says it can be used every 4-6 hours (I've read of others using it before feedings). I think you are bf'ing, but we found dr browns bottles (level 1 or 2 nipple for just formula or level 3 nipple if you are thickening formula) cause the least gas for our "Gas Princess", as we call her. The levsin drops have been extremely helpful on numerous occasions --- she seems to be instantly soothed to the point I wrap and snuggle her until until she is calm. Levsin doesn't seem to work for long periods of time, but it can stem a screaming gas fit. Good luck & keep trying --- have faith that you will find some things that work!

That's funny you mention that because I forgot that we had that prescription for him a while ago. We ran out of it a couple months ago. I might see if the gi will prescribe that too. It did seem to help him but you're right it wasn't for very long. It seemed to work a lot better than the regular mylicon drops though. We have the dr. brown bottles but he seems to not have done very well with them before because of the size of the nipple. But we haven't tried them for a while so it might be worth a shot again. Hopefully we'll get it figured out for a little peace at night. Thanks. Btw, I'm glad to hear that payton is starting to feel better. I remember reading your posts about her. It's hard to sometimes make our little ones feel better with so many trial and errors. I'm glad some of your trials have worked for her. Good luck and take care.

Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!
I can't remember...is he on prevacid or zantac? If the other things don't work maybe he needs a dosage change. I do remember that around 5mos is when we upped Maggie's dose of zantac bc it was worse. It's hard to know if it's bc of teething or what but I remember a lot of the old clan saying their kid was having more trouble through this stage.

It sucks when you feel like you got it then boom, it hits again.

When are y'all going to that concert? Ours is in Nov. I wanna hear how it is.

Hey Melissa! My hubby is getting on the gi's case tomorrow so we'll see if we can get a different med for him.

Our concert isn't until November either. I think it's like the 12 or something like that. School night! But I have a feeling that a lot of girls will be going to school tired that next day. I'll let you know the date and see who's going first. Hope everything is well!

Cool! Here it's the Tues before Thanksgiving...Wed is a half day so I may not even send Morgan. We'll see how it goes I guess.

Are they doing the paperless tickets there? That freaks me out a little. Never done it before.

Check with your
doctor first!
