Aloe Vera Juice
Anyone ever heard of or tried Aloe Vera Juice with your little ones for reflux? We traveled this past week and saw some friends. They suggested we should try it with Stanton. I looked on line and it says it's good for a variety of heartburn and other digestive issues. Not sure about it and just wondered if anyone had experience here. Thanks! Ginger

Picture: This is what happens when you raise a kid on health food and they get ahold of a Coke! Bad mom, that soda is NOT on the reflux diet.
UPDATE: Isaiah is now 12 and off meds! He is doing great, eating again and hopefully will be catching up in the growing department. I am still in the "hoping it sticks" phase, but we're so happy that he's better!
We tried it...I think it might have helped a little. Our refluxer was older, though. It is *nasty* so I'm not sure how you could get a younger child to drink it...we mixed it with juice and/or smoothies, which helped. It couldn't hurt to check with a doctor before giving it to a little one...I don't think it has anything in it that would be a concern, but you never know! I know an adult who has GERD and he says it does help.

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. My cousin sent me a recipe for it once mixing it with some juices. I never tried it with him though because he is pretty persnickity about what he will drink. I will see if I can find it for you.

I used to use it for my son who have severe asthma as a baby, and it helped alot. I never thought to try it for GERD though. I will get a bottle and see if he will drink it. Let us know if you do try it and if it helps at all.

Thanks for all of your thoughts. I think it can't hurt to try, so I'm going to venture off to the health food store when Stanton wakes up from his nap. The bottle my friends had said children could take 1 tsp a day beginning at age one year. So - I'll try to sneak maybe 1/2 in a bottle and 1/2 in his afternoon smoothie snack. I'll let you know if I see a difference. Stanton doesn't eat any solids yet, unless you count 2 bites of stage 1 applesauce as a "solid"......so bottles and smoothies are my only hiding spots.

Thanks so much for the juice recipe. Not sure I'll be able to get that down Stanton.....but I'll try. All the info I've read about aloe vera juice talks about helping with bms/constipation issues. We don't really have that problem so I hope it doesn't take us to the other extreme....

I would definitely ask Stanton's pedi first. I have heard that aloe vera juice is a natural laxative which could help if you have reflux aggravated by constipation. I would start slow if they give you the ok. Sometimes things that are laxative in nature can really tear up the tummies of these sensitive little ones. Mine could never do things like prune juice or even Kayro syrup. They were constipated and needed those kinds of things but they never reacted well to them. If he is constipated it could really cause his reflux to flare. You might ask for the safest laxative for kids, usually they will tell you Miralax. Other then that I don't know much, good or bad, about its effects on acid reflux.
Check with your
doctor first!
