Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Allergies?
Out of despiration and nothing left to try I gave Ryan a half a teaspoon of childrens Claritin at 8 and 1 tsp of Mylanta Cherry Supreme at 10:30. This morning- diaper full of bm, Zero gagging, zero nausea, zero mucas, he actually reached for his bottle and drank 3 oz and took another three in oatmeal while sitting in a chair. Totally out of the norm. For 2 months he would scream when he saw the bottle in the morning, refused it, cried when I forced the cereal in him, gagging the entire time but when we were done he was rocking and rolling. What the heck? Which med did the trick? The Claritin or the Mylanta? Any of you guys using Claritin?

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
there's no way to know...the Claritin probably cleared up the mucous which helps with the gagging and vomiting, but maybe the Mylanta helped with the pain. Maybe try just one of them tomorrow morning and see?? Honestly, if the combo works, I would probably stick with it...can't hurt!!!

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
Jedd is a serious MESS without his allergy meds. We have tried twice (in the middle of winter mind you) to wean him off of them and to no avail.

When we tried him off the meds, he became horribly mucousy, sneezy, runny, itchy runny eyes....You name it, he was doing it. He was super gaggy due to all that excess drainage.

If you are seeing an improvement, I'd keep doing it. FIWI Jedd used Claritin for a LONG time and then he built up an immunity to it. He got 3 sinus infections back to back while on meds so we switched him to Zyrtec. The only other times he has gotten sinus infections like that was when we tried to take him off allergy meds.

We also always use the generic forums of all meds whether it's RX or OTC.

Also, yes you are only supposed to start Claritin at age 2, but, Jedd was taking the full 5cc dose at about 14 months old. Like I said, he takes Zyrtec now at a full dose as well.

Well, I did the Claritin and the Mylanta again last night. He woke up again feeling like a rock start. Reached for the bottle and held it himself while he drank 3.5 oz and then had the other 3 oz in oatmeal while sitting in a chair instead of me chasing him down. No black circles under the eyes either. This is really wierd. He has never had runny red eyes and hasnt has a runny nose since he got his ear tubes. Perhaps it has all been running down the back of his throat this entire time irritating it and his stomach and causing the sore throats and canker soars. Very very strange. I am going to an allergist on Tuesday maybe I will learn something new. I am sticking with the protacal for now before I try to eliminate anything. We could all use a fews days of stress free feedings.

Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
sounds like you may have hit on something. makes a lot of sense.

We just completes day 4 of the Claritin at 8 and Mylanta at 10. He is having 3 bm a day with the consistency that I remember as being "normal" like my daughter at that age (his has been so hard since birth) no coughing, gagging, nausea or attacking his face. The best part... .his appetite wont end. He has been eating and drinking like he hasnt eaten in a year. He has been a bit crabby but when you give him food he stops. That is totally new and unheard of for us. For over a year this child could care less if he ate or not and if you left it up to him he would starve to death. Either we have struck gold by accident or he is doing the baby bait and switch because he knows we are seeing a new doc tomorrow and he wants me to look like a crazy person when I have him at the doc tomorrow.
