32week preemie DOB 11/6/07 Diagnosed w/ Gerds 4weeks old. Zantac, Tagamet and reglan all tried. Sleep eater for the first 7 months of life. Now prevacid twice a day-- Finally ate table food at 15 months! Gagging and then vomiting when eating 99% better thank goodness!
Wean off Prevacid??? Please help?
Ok so today my 19 mo old went to the GI... unfortunately I didn't go and instead sent my not ask questions other half! AUHG! And he said to just quit the prevacid and that was that. That he didn't feel he had GERDS anymore. Even though he still has bad days from time to time, and when he is sick it's vomit central and his digestion comes to a complete stop!!! What do I do. I have heard everyone on this site say they weaned their kids off prevacid... how did that go? What did you guys do.. what protocol did you follow? Please help! I don't know what to do. I was never 100% happy with my GI.. he can be a real BOOB! Thinking instead giving him the full solutab to cut back to half etc. Any advise? Thank you all so much for any and all input!

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
Our first few attempts were unsuccessful, but we went from a full tab to 3/4 (pill splitters are pretty much necessary!) for a couple of weeks, then 1/2 for a couple, then 1/2 every other day and so on. Once I didn't hear any silent reflux or saw any signs, that's when we cut it out completely. Took a few months, but she's been doing well. I still have about 20 tabs just in case I see the signs, but usually Maalox or Mylanta will take care of it. You may be able to cut down the dose but may have to go back up on occassion (we had to when her allergies kicked up) but once that was resolve we went back to the dose she'd been on before.

Other than that, if the digestion is still a problem, I'd recommend looking onto probiotics to help rebalance the gut flora. Has helped my dh, dd, and my dog ;-) Good luck, and just remember that you're going to have good days and bad days and don't give up. The first wean may not work, especially if there's teething involved.

How did you know she was silent refluxing? He never vomits anymore, but I just dont know if he's ready. Every so often I see him rub his face after eating and it's not cuz he's sleepy. I will try cutting down slowly... thanks for your input!!! He eats tons and tongs of yogurt with live cultures so I think he's ok on the probiotic end.

I would def suggest weaning slowing and not stopping cold turkey. We weaned Abby from 1/2 tablet twice per day to 1/2 tablet at night. We started by cutting the am pill in half. Did that for a few months without any problems. So then we dropped the am dose. She still was fine with just the 1/2 tablet at night. Then we tried splitting the pm dose in half (so 1/4 of a 15mg tablet). I started to notice she would start gagging/coughing for no apparent reason. This didn't happen all the time but on occasion. I def think it was the reflux so we went back on the 1/2 tablet at night. The gagging/coughing episodes haven't happened since. So I am sticking with this dose for awhile. She doesn't see a pedi GI anymore (we hated ours) so I will see what her pedi says at her check up on Thursday.

There are so many strains of probiotics and yogurt only has one - acidophilus. Just something to keep in mind. The silent reflux is usually the audible hard swallowing, hiccoughs, and occassionally you can feel it when you hold them.

You also may want to ask about stepping him down to an H2 blocker like Zantac, Pepcid, or Axid.

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
Did he says WHY he wanted to wean?? Many GIs will do it just because of age, not a good reason to do a wean.JMHO

With Jedd we did a PPi full time for a long long time. When we weaned we went to a PPI in the P.M. and an H2blocker (Axid) in the A.M. We were then able to wean to the H2 full time.

We have NO plans to wean any further and Jedd is 2.5 years old. We are waiting until Jedd can tell us verbally who he feels when he doesn't take his meds. We feel it will be unfair to him, given his past pain issues with GERD, to take him off meds with out his input.

BTW we tried to use Zantac to save our selves some money, and it didn't go over well at all. Axid just is doing the trick for him, so we will be stuck with the $50. a month copays. Stinks when Zantac is less than $10 a month. Oh well, whatever keeps Jedd pain free, we will do.

Thank you guys all so much for your input. Yeah I absolutely hate my GI! He's older so he thinks he knows more than everyone even the mother of the child who can really be in tune with him! Oh well.. I am going to try to email him and see about an H2 blocker and weaning him. I just fear he canceled our prevacid prescription and may not have enough to wean for very long! I'm so scared of him having pain and just ruining all the good weight gaining and positive things we've built. Do not want to feed my child while he screams and turns his face again! I want those days long and gone!!!!

Work around the GI or get a second opinion even if it's in the same practice. Can you you also see the Ped and will they write an RX for the Prevacaid. IF you do plan to wean, which JMHO I would not, I'd want at least 6 months worth to be able to slowly wean.
