constipation and reflux
We are realizing that a lot of Kody's issues for the last few months might be related to him being backed up. It's been a while since we've dealt with the constipation thing, 9 years. So we were told to give him miralax. 1 tsp in his bottles but since he still regularly breastfeeds and won't drink very much from a bottle right now I have a hard time getting it in him. So we tried fletchers laxative. Nothing. We'ver tried prunes notta. Of course it's getting worse when he eats solids. I've been doing massage for a while now. Everything either stops working or doesn't work at all. I've been talking to the gi about this and they seem to just dismiss it. Considering my daughter has HD I would think that they would know to listen even though only 8% of other siblings would get it doesn't mean that my son can't be considered. We went through 8 months of hell with my daughter and then some even after her surgery.

Sorry to carry on. I just need to have my memory jogged of what other tricks I can do to help him? Thanks everyone!

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
Magnesium and probiotics is what finally got my dd going after 6 months of nothing else working (prunes helped, but not until we got her to go on her own). This was after Miralax, lactulose, massage, enemas, etc. The Mg and probiotics may be tough to get into him if he's still BF, but maybe putting it only in an ounce of expressed BM or formula and see if he'll take it. Apple juice, prune juice, extra water, and perhaps some rectal stimulation may help. Good luck, mama - it's so hard.

I have also administered the Mg and probiotics in a 5 ml syringe of juice, if that helps.

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. We use 4 ml of milk of magnesium. Works everytime. I cant get the Miralax in Ryan either so I was told to use Milk of Mag instead. Hope that helps.

If he is really backed up they have pedialax- which is a glycerine suppository that you can use. It says on the box for kids 5 and up ( i think) but my Ped says it is just fine to use for babies too. Even when Johnnie was so constipated nothing worked- that would almost instantly. I have had to use it several times before we got the Miralax going. I give the miralax mixed with 2 ounces of pear juice and he drinks it right down. I tried mixing with formula but he wouldn't touch it. 1 tsp of Miralax is not very much though. I didn't see any improvement until we got to a tablespoon. I just give it all at once- one time a day mixed in his juice. We tried everything else and he would either refuse or it didn't do anything. Good Luck

slimfast mom, what is the brand of mg suppliment you use? I bought Baby Calm but you have to mix that with 3 oz or more of water.

We used Nature's Creations (we found it at a pharmacy called Medicap.) It's yet another one of those that needs to be ordered by health professionals, but if you want to try it, I can probably get a bottle and send it to you. Or I can set up an account and see if I can order it that way. This is the link to the tear sheet for the Mag Chlor we had her on: http://sites.securehp.com/folder21804/listing/Mag_Chlor1.pdf

I just started her on a capsule (powdered) Mg supplement from the same place we get the probiotics....seems to be okay - she hasn't noticed in it her juice at all. Little more difficult to gauge how much she's getting, but all it all less expensive.

We also did Fleet Babylax when she was too stopped up - our ped said it was fine and is dosed for infants (it says 2 years and up, but we used one every 2-3 days under our ped's instructions) May not hurt to ask your pharm or MD

Thanks for the ideas. I bought some probiotics and some little tummies laxative drops tonight. He also got an enema. We have used the babylax every couple days because he gets so uncomfortable.

This might sound stupid but is the milk of magnesium sold in the stores? How much do you use? I'm hoping something will make him go instead of us making him go rectally. Crossing my fingers that things start moving for him. Poor guy.

Kathryn, Pager Volunteer and mommy to Emily Mia 02/04/07. 3 years old with GERD. 30mg Prevacid and Pepcid AC. Mylanta needed for flares. Failed prilosec med switch. Tried and failed many med weans but GERD and pain are well controlled. Functional constipation. Reoccurring SBBO. Suspected IBD or autoimmune disease. Resolved issues: MSPI, CSID (acquired), Stage 2 kidney reflux, Chronic diarrhea.
Audrey Meadow 06/20/08. born 34/35 weeks. Still b/f and eats everything! ftt and chronic constipation.
milk of magnesia is sold in stores; just as it's name is. but you really should ask a dr how much to use. I know you went through the gamemnt, as I have, but m.o.m. never worked for us. we went up to 8tsp. but we had a starting dose at 2tsp. (4 months at >11lbs) we also had her on Little Tummy's which is just like Fletchers- with no real result either.
we never had any results with rectal stim. or juices. BUT oddly enough had good luck with mylanta. Audrey is not a "refluxer" but responds very well to the magnesium in there. I don't know quite what to do with that but per advice i am going to ask for a vitamin with a Mg. Supp.

they are sure he doesn't have USS? I called out GI and they are not eve sure Audrey doesn;t have it, it makes me wonder sometimes...

We've had to do Fleet's babylax with holden. Our nutritionist told me to ask about Miralax when I go July 9th. I mainly wanted to say what a CUTE picture! I need to figure out how to do that. It is so nice to put a face with the name as i think about and pray for all of you mommas quite often!

I agree, he's adorable! I need to figure out how to get a picture up myself. Johnnie turns 1 today! Yeah , isn't that the magic # for the reflux to go away?! That means a full nights sleep tonight! Wouldn't it be nice if that were true!

Slimfast mom, thanks for the info on the mg. I will stop at Medicap tomorrow. For such a small pharmacy the sure have a lot of odd stuff. That is where I bought the duocal. They keep it in stock. Everywhere else wanted to make me special order an entire order of it. Not them. Thanks for the info. Mommy2k, as far as the Milk of Mag, you can buy that any where you buy Maalox and Mylanta. Same section of the store. It is made by Phillips. Be careful with the suppositories and enemas. Ryan got to the point that he would scream the minute you laid him on the changing table. He knew what was coming. Aversion on the other end?? ; ) Anyway, definately do it if you have to but once you get him unstuck try other methods to keep him that way. Ask your doc about the Milk of Mag dose. I was told 4 ml twice a day, but once was all we needed. Our GI said it was all they used before Miralax. When it got really bad we used mineral oil. Nasty... I know but it works and no fear of it messing with anything as it doesnt not go into their blood stream. Slips right through their tummy and makes things a little slippery down there in the bowels. Dont give it before you lay him down though. Yeap.. there is a older doc in our practice that doesnt believe in all the new fangled drugs out there. He was right though.. It worked. : ) Good luck.

I did it in a little round-about way...I made an account on photobucket, uploaded the pic I wanted. On the left side of the page there is a box that says share this image...I copied the direct link code (minus the http:) I just copied the link starting at the // part. Hope this helps! Oh! And thanks to all you mommy's out there that know so much about reflux....I just started researching/dealing with it this past week and I've found this site to be the most helpful!! THANKS!! =)

I will go and get the milk of mag tomorrow and find out how much from my gi. I didn't call my gi today about anything. I was having a frustrating day and I wasn't in the mood to talk to them if you kwim. I didn't want some poor nurse to get my ranting.

The highter dose of prilosec is still working but I think he's cutting teeth now. He's been really irritable and drooling more.

Kat-They haven't tested Kody for anything to do with his bowels because we didn't really complain about it then. We were always told everything he was doing was normal. I should have known better having been through what we did with my daughter. We plan on trying to push for a suction biopsy just to help rule it out. I think that from what you've told me about Audrey that she probably does have HD. But it's very hard to diagnose with some children that don't show typical symptoms and it being an ultra short segment. My daughter still has problems and always wonder if we need to do something for her. She's always needing to be on laxatives. She had the same symptoms as Audrey and didn't ever have a hard stomach.

Well have a good night everyone.

Check with your
doctor first!
