May have found some reliefWe had Kody's gastric emptying study on Wednesday and he was off his prilosec. Well for some reason he slept a little better on Tues night. I haven't been able to figure it out with diet or anything. So of course we were thinking he didn't need the prilosec. Well that was a big mistake because he had a horrible night on Wed and Thursday all day. I gave himm his dose on Thursday afternoon but gave him a little bit more. I gave him 3ml instead of 2ml. Well oh my gosh his symptoms of crying out at night was better and he was less uncomfortable. He had another dose this morning of the same amount. He had such an awesome day. He actually was eating better, not fussing, happy and was able to eat some solids without crying afterwards. I don't know if I should even be typing that my baby isn't in as much pain right now because I don't want to jinx it. (knocking on wood)
I'm so frustrated at my gi which is why I have an appt with a second opinion right now. Unfortunately it's scheduled for after our appt with our current gi. He is beating this allergy thing like a dead horse and we've been trying to go along with it. It's not adding up. I'm not liking the neocate for him either. It's been giving him terrible gas, runny green poop and smelly. I've been giving him only about 2 bottles of it a day and the other times he breastfeeds. But yesterday and today he didn't get any. So it's such a fight to tell him that maybe his dose isn't high enough of prilosec. He told me that the prilosec is doing it's job to keep the pain at bay and that's not why Kody is so fussy and uncomfortable day and night. I'm not claiming I'm an expert just a mother with instincts. A mother that's with him a lot more than the docs are.
Would the meds be working if it was allergy related? Could he have that many allergy issues if we have no allergies in our families? I don't know why he has reflux but all I know is my daughter had it until she was 7 and my DH has issues with it as well although he's just a tums popper. I know I will have to deal with this on Monday but I'm hoping to have some much needed relief for at least a few days. I also hope it's not a huge struggle to get my gi to raise the dose of prilosec. Any advice on how I get him to help us relieve Kody's pain? I wish I could just keep the day we had for everyday because I haven't seen Kody this happy in a long time. It was such a nice day and we were gone all day which is usually a hit or miss of whether we'll be able to do much with him these days especially in the car. My family actually got a taste of what normalcy was like. I know too well from experience that it may not last and I still need to take it one day at a time or some days one hour at a time. Pray for us! I also will find out about the results to his test hopefully on Monday too. They were closed today for the holiday. Oh and happy 4th everyone. Have a great weekend!

I am sooooo glad you have found a little relief. I am typing this as my baby screams every few minutes and its 11pm. Don't get me wrong, he is doing really well on the nexium, but I have been giving it in the morning because thats the best time to know he hasnt eaten in a couple hours, but im wondering if I need to switch it to the evening because his nights are horrible! He is such a happy baby in general, I just know if he could sleep at night he would be that much better. Let us know how it goes on Monday, and Happy 4th to you too!

Kathryn, Pager Volunteer and mommy to Emily Mia 02/04/07. 3 years old with GERD. 30mg Prevacid and Pepcid AC. Mylanta needed for flares. Failed prilosec med switch. Tried and failed many med weans but GERD and pain are well controlled. Functional constipation. Reoccurring SBBO. Suspected IBD or autoimmune disease. Resolved issues: MSPI, CSID (acquired), Stage 2 kidney reflux, Chronic diarrhea.
Audrey Meadow 06/20/08. born 34/35 weeks. Still b/f and eats everything! ftt and chronic constipation.
with emily her milk issues were totally separate from reflux (yet kinda connected) any exposure to milk or soy she would puke. she was usually a silent refluxer but if we gave her soy or milk... ooo man... if we kept her on her reflux meds and introed. milk or soy she would still puke.
it wasn't until she was much older that we could intro milk while she was on meds
neocate does cause green smelly poops only cause it moves through the GI system fast v/c there is little to be left over after the body absorbs all the nutrients.
if it was allergy related it's doubtful the prilosec meds would have any effect only because allergies cause the body to react differently and reflux might be a symptom but other symptoms may be present too.
my dd had her prevacid raised from a 15mg to a 22.5 (which is a pill and a half) and pretty difficult to achieve without a pill cutter- which i didn't have so i gave her 30 mg a day and she was awesome! I told the GI this and he was very ready to say, well keep her there if she is happy!
i hope they say the same for you- oh! peptobisomal kids has been a god send for emily- how old is kody?

Kody is 6 months now. He'll actually be 7 in a week. I haven't heard of peptobismol kids. I wonder if Kody could take it.
It's funny that Kody is sleeping peacefully in his car seat with the fan on in the bthroom because of fireworks and I'm up. I can't sleep at all. It sucks! Any other time I would probably be so exhausted and want to sleep but can't because he's usually up every hour crying. Oh well!
johhiesnewmommy I hope you get some sleep tonight. I hope that the much needed relief comes to you. I hate horrible nights. I don't understand how our los can go with so little sleep. I certainly can't function or even be cival somedays because I'm so tired. `

I decided to experiment again with timing of his Nexium. I didn't give it to him this morning and by lunchtime he was a screaming monster. I didn't give in and gave him some Mylanta instead, and that bought me some time. I gave the Nexium this afternoon so we will see if he sleeps any better tonight. I may just have to ask the GI if we can up the nexium dose to 2 a day.

Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!
Hey! Hopefully if you're just honest and straight with the gi, he'll at least let you try the upped dosage long enough to see if it works. I can't imagine why he wouldn't. It's funny, I think I coined the phrase "knock on wood" around here. I used it so much that I started typing "kow" and people knew what I meant!
I haven't saved your email address, I always forget to add it to my contacts...will you email me so I can put it in there? ;)

Ok, I went back to the morning dosage (LOL) because last night was the worst in a long time. So much for thinking- sometimes you get an idea and you just have to act on it. Next time I get an idea will someone smack me?

Don't you hate the trial and error thing. Can he have another dose in the evening? Did he finally get some sleep for you? How are you doing with his new diet he's on? I think of you when I'm reading labels for myself to avoid dairy. It's hard. You're such an awesome momma!
