How do I get the Prevacid in him???
We just got Prevacid capsules prescribed by the ENT last week. She said to break them open and mix the sprinkles in with a small amount of applesauce or yogurt or something. I was a little hesitant that this would work because the 19-month-old little dude doesn't really consistently eat any specific type of food (especially pureed consistency for some reason -- good eater overall, though). Hubby's been trying to give it to him the past few days and he just refuses/spits it out when he feels the little sprinkles in his mouth. We just paid an obscene amount of money for this first prescription ($120!) since we needed to meet our deductible, otherwise I'd just call and get the solutabs prescribed instead (which we had good luck with in the past). Any magic solutions??? I'm really tempted to turn it into a situation where I won't let him nurse or something until he takes it but I don't know that that's a good idea...

Mary & Nicholas 7-17-03 (non-refluxer)allergies, asthma on Singulair and Flovent & Aidan 1-28-07(my refluxer)Nissen Fundoplication on June 20, 2008, FTT, MSPI, DGE, ear tubes, allergies and severe GERD now currently taking just Prevacid and drinking Elecare Vanilla 1+.
At 19 months I would think you could just open the capsule skip the food and poor it on his tongue and then offer him some water or a little nursing session to make sure it gets down. That is what we did with Nexium which comes in capsule form. We have mostly used the Prevacid solutabs and they are so much easier.

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
we are solutab users, too, but I would suggest either mixing it with a little juice (what we do) or on stubborn days we put it into a syringe and squeeze it into the cheek pocket...and hold his mouth shut til he swallows...it totally sucks. I would ask your doc about a few samples. We always need a little extra for those spit out days and our doc is generous with the samples. Good luck!

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Read his story for more specifics that just might help you too - Karen
I would disolve it in 4 ml of water and offer to let him drink it. If he wont then I would squirt it in. Prevacid and a syringe and a medicine cup and any little medicine cup will do. I agree with Zachs mom, if you hit a wall get samples. My ENT gave me a big box last time I was there so I could keep some in my car and my husbands car. Can I ask you a question?? I see that your son has laryngopharyngeal reflux. Can you tell me more about that. Every time my son gets bad he goes hoarse then looses his voice. Is that the definition of LR?? My GI never specified the kind he has.

Thanks for the ideas! We hadn't even thought of mixing the sprinkles with liquids. :) Part of his symptoms though are frequent choking/coughing with fluids so we have to be careful trying to "force" meds into him. Last night he was super-excited about trying my Starbucks frappucino so maybe he'd take that in a little medicine cup with the sprinkles (we were also tempted to mix them into his spaghetti -- the kid's favorite foods are horrible for reflux! And no, I don't normally give him coffee) :) I'll see what I can find out this week about getting some solutab samples, and I might just call the pharmacy and see exactly what it'll cost to get a new prescription this month.

Dont forget that it needs to be given on an empty stomache and 30 minutes before food except for a tablespoon of applesauce, cottage cheese, yogurt or strained pears. Check out prevacids website. They are pretty specific about how to give the meds. This is because prescribing it in any other ways decreases its effectiveness.

My little guy for some reason just doesn't like pureed foods -- will sometimes want pudding but that's about it. So no applesauce, yogurt etc, at least on a consistent basis. I got a suggestion from another mom to try using chocolate (his absolute most favorite not-a-good-reflux-choice treat), and that seems to work quite well. We put the sprinkles in a teaspoon of hershey's syrup, add a couple chocolate chips on top, then he eats the choc chips, we put a couple more on, he eats those too, then add one more "serving" of choc chips and he's licked the spoon clean and gotten all the sprinkles down. Not so sure how this will work for the reflux, but at least we know he'll be getting the medication in. We see a pulmonologist in two weeks and will just ask her to re-prescribe it as solutabs then because it should count as a new month for insurance purposes.
