Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Liver Testing While on Prevacid
Ryan is 13 months old has been on Prevacid since he was 2 months old. His dose increased from 7.5 mg to 30 mg over time. He has never had any liver testing done. Is it common to have it tested or not tested. I want to make sure we are not skipping over an important test. What is is about Prevacid that is hard on the liver? How do you know with out testing that there might be problems developing? Anything I should be watching for? I don't think anything is wrong, just want to make sure I am educated.

Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
Haven't heard of anything like that. I think as long as you are within the guidelines of what your GI is prescribing you will be just fine.

Now when they get into college - that's when we will need the liver testing :)

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
Liver testing is not commonly done for kids unless there has been a previous liver-related issue (ie: jaundice.) Most drugs get passed through the liver through the hepatic portal system, which is why liver function testing is more common when on long term meds for most conditions. These kids generally get off the meds before routine testing is recommended.

Things to watch for when concerned about liver damage: easy bruising, weakness, itching, or loss of appetite (can't use that sign with reflux though). More severe signs would be edema, mental confusion, or kidney failure. I haven't heard of anyone getting testing done for Prevacid, but if you're concerned, you could always ask your doc.

Excellent. Thanks for the info. Someone had asked me if they were monitoring his liver so I paniced a bit. Great to know. Thanks!! Oh and the liver testing while in college... I keep joking that he will finally forget about his fluid aversion once he gets to college... : ) We were so darn close to having gotten past that aversion till his molars started coming through. Back where we started. Darn it!!

Mary & Nicholas 7-17-03 (non-refluxer)allergies, asthma on Singulair and Flovent & Aidan 1-28-07(my refluxer)Nissen Fundoplication on June 20, 2008, FTT, MSPI, DGE, ear tubes, allergies and severe GERD now currently taking just Prevacid and drinking Elecare Vanilla 1+.
Ditto what Jessica said
My sons liver function was tested once every 3 months when he was also taking 60 mg of Prevacid. He is only taking 15 mg now and it has never been done again. I think you will see warning signs in your child if their are liver issues.

60 mg a day? I asked to have Ryan's dose increased now that he has finally gained weight and was told by the GI and the Ped that he was maxed out and couldnt have a higher dose. That is interesting. He is getting his molars right now so he refluxing is flaring like I have never seen. He voice is gone and he is refusing liquids and eating min amounts. I asked to have it temporarily increased while we get through the teeth but was told no. I couldnt even get Carafat for him.

Holden is 7 months old on 30 mg as well. I was told that was a max dose. Thank goodness though his scope showed no damage on this dose. I know the two kiddos above on 60 mg ended up with a nissen. So maybe in exteme cases they will go up. I'm hoping when the 30 mg isn't enough they will go up or at least let me add something else in. Well, hopefully it will always be enough!! Anyway at 30 mg at 7 months old no one has mentioned checking his liver to me either and he has been on this dose sice 4 months. Teething stinks!! I dread molars!
