Help! Advice on weaning meds
I would appreciate some advice on issues weaning from prevacid. My son has been on prevacid since 5 weeks old and now is 23 months. He is on 15 mg solutab, split in half with doses in am and pm. Around 13 months we did an upper GI which showed some reflux still as we were unable to wean him off his prevacid around one year. He is also intolerant of dairy and soy. I tried recently to decrease his am dose to 1/4 tab and then to drop it completely. He was off the am dose completely for a week. He started to have screaming fits, arching his neck back so far I thought his head was going to snap off. He was also crying when going down for a nap occasionally which never happens or not sleeping well. It's just so hard to know at this age if it is reflux pain causing the 30 plus minute scream fest or if he is just being a toddler and having a tantrum. He also was just wanting his binkie all the time and wanting to nurse often too. Do kids get some kind of withdrawal after being on prevacid for so long? Should we try a lesser medication for a while? Our GI doc said if he can't get off of meds by 2, he wants to do an endoscopy and pH probe study. I just don't know when to throw in the towel with weaning and go ahead with more testing. He is an otherwise healthy little guy. It has just been such a difficult two years figuring all this stuff out.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
If he's still comfort feeding, wanting the pacifier, and arching on the decreased dosage, I'd push for further testing and keep the meds for a bit longer. Dropping to an H2 blocker is an option, but I'd get the endo done to make sure you're not dealing with damage. HUGS, mama - good luck!

Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
ditto!

Thank you for your advice. It is just so hard to know what to do. I will speak to our GI doc about the endoscopy. What is the benefit of doing a pH probe, if we already know he is refluxing?? Anyone done this? Thanks!

The probe will be able to tell if he's refluxing acidic fluid (basically testing if the meds are working) and how much he's refluxing. The endo will be able to check for damage and take biopsies to test for any other disorders (ie - allergies, celiac's, EE, etc).
