Feeling hopeless and tired today (may be long)
Hey everyone! We have recently tried to get Kody who is 6 months now on alimentum because I breastfeed and I thought that it would make him feel better if I got him to take that. Well I commend those that have been able to do it. He started to drink it and then all out refused on Monday. He just screamed. With me being exhausted emotionally and physically I just couldn't watch him starve himself again so I just bfed him. He had one good night this week and the rest has been crap. He had two really bad days and the rest were pretty good. I think that prilosec is working but his nights still suck. He got up every hour last night. I feel really hopeless right now. He has started to go 3 hours now on eating so that's good. But I still have to breastfeed him which I don't know an easy answer. We tried flavoring the formula and no go. I just have a hard time getting him to drink either alimentum or nutramigen. He can't eat solids because everything seems to get worse. Well just his nights and then the next day is fussy fussy fussy. I'm at my wits end. I want to just pull my hair out. My hubby and I are stressed so it's a lot of fighting going on. To top it all off he got shots today so that's going to be rough. He seems to have trouble passing gas and his reflux seems to get worse during the sleep times. I don't get it. I swear if that gi tells me to take one more thing out of my diet I will scream. I wish they could just help us figure something out. My hubby wants to try and flavor the alimentum with some vanilla flavoring but he doesn't have to be here when Kody is screaming and won't eat. And he keeps reaching for me to feed him. It breaks my heart. I also almost got an infection even with pumping trying to do the cold turkey thing so that doesn't work and he got really stressed out not getting to nurse anymore. So see why I feel so hopeless right now? Mainly I needed to vent and have a pity party for myself with people that understood where I'm coming from. I always appreciate any input anyone has as well or stories similar to help out. It makes me cry just smelling that alimentum or nutramigen. Plus he seemed to have been worse on Sunday night after getting alimentum all weekend so that doesn't make sense to me. Oh my lo is up gotta go. Here we go!

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
I'm so sorry...just know that you're not alone and a LOT of us have been there...will he take abottle of BM? or is it the bottle that freaks him out...if he WIL take a bottle...I would try just adding a tablespoon or so of alimentium and movign up from there as he'll accept it..it may be long and slow, but worth it. I went straight to Elecare and Z handled it fine, so I dont know if there's a better option than alimentium that kids might accpet better, but I would try it really slowly. *hugs* hang in there!

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Read his story for more specifics that just might help you too - Karen
I am sooo sorry. I wish I had a magic wand for you and all the other reflux moms and babies. It it so hard. Hang in there and know that we are all her for you. Call in the calvery for help. I totally regret that I didnt call on my friends and family. That was a mistake. I needed a break. We all needed me to take a break but I wouldnt. I look back at that now and I realize that I should have shared the load with others.

Hi, I totally feel for you! When my 6yr old was your sons age I used to write on a paper how many times he was up every night, sometimes 16-20 screaming just to prove to the doc that it wan't teething!! Neither of my sons would drink any of the formulas either, I just kept breastfeeding! Do you know that the Alimentum and Nutramigen still have some milk protein? If you are seriously wanting to wean ask the GI for samples of Elecare or Neocate to be SURE it is milk/soy free. Is there a local La Leche Leaque meeting you can go to? They were a great source of strength for me when my kids were nursing, you can just listen or talk and kids all come! They will also talk to you on the phone, you can look them up on the internet. Give the Prilosec time, ask if he's on the highest dosage, and ask what dosage of Maalox to give him in the interim for pain. Both my sons get gassy also when the reflux is real bad. Maalox has antigas in it, also. He's so young, don't worry about the solids. If you do try something, maybe you could try something that would help with the bowels like mashed pear. Don't do banana and rice if he's having trouble passing poops. I made that mistake. My 6yr old got so he would drink some Enriched Rice Milk, best one according to his dietician is Rice Dream Enriched Rice Milk(Vanilla Flavor). It's consistensy is close to breast milk and tastes sweet like breast milk. Course it's not a "total nutrition" drink, but if she liked it even now, maybe you could get her to eat some pureed chicken for protein. My son used to like it in the baby food, very mild. I finally weaned my son at 16mths onto the rice milk, we'd tried every elemental formula the GI doc gave us samples of and he refused. He cried all night while I held him and walked with him. Then by the next day a little fussing, then nothing, he forgot about it, maybe I was lucky, but it broke my heart. My older one nursed until he was 2. I think he needs your comfort so much now. Before you take more things out of your diet, give the meds time to work and make sure he is on enough of it. Both my kids take Prilosec and it works good for us. E-mail my anytime you need to talk, I know how frustrating it is and I know about the fighting because of the stress!

Big hugs mommy2K!!! Get out of the house for a little bit. The other night I just went through Starbuck's and got a cup of coffee and rode around for a little bit. This is emotionally and physically draining and you need to try to get your mind off of it even if it is just for a little bit in between feedings. Once again, big hugs and keep us updated.

Yes, get out of the house if you can! I used to walk through the mall near here a lot, just to be with other people!

Thank you so much everyone for your words of encouragement and the suggestions. Zack'smom- Kody will take a bottle. He just hates the formula. I guess I could try a minute amount of alimentum in his bottle and see how it goes. Thanks

When we were trying milk or a different formula, my son's allergist told us to start with 1/2 ts. for a few days, then go up to a tsp. for a few days, then on and on to see if he would have a reaction to it or not.

Sorry I had more to say but I'm tired and I hit the wrong button on computer. vigilantmom- I definitely think it'll benefit me to reach out for help so I will try and do that. It's something I'm not used to doing though. debbieb and mommato3- thank you so much for your input. Kody just started going a little longer in between feeds so I might find it easier to leave for a little while. I'm hiding out in my bedroom right now and kicked my hubby out for a while. I just needed to be by myself for a while. I will have to write down how many times Kody gets up. I don't think I slept more than an hour at a time last night. It was awful. I will have to look for a local la leche league meeting somewhere. I wish that breastfeeding was a little more enjoyable for me and Kody but it seems like it's a struggle. He's usually struggling and he eats all the time. He started doing a new thing yesterday of coughing more. He had to be given maalox last night through the night which we haven't had to do in a while. He's also refluxing a lot today and I'm assuming it's from his shots. I'm crossing my fingers that he has a bette night. I feel like a zomby and still have my daughter who has a big attitude problem with me right now. I think it's because Kody is consuming a lot of my time. Does anyone know if 2 ml 2x's a day of prilosec is a high enough dose? That's what Kody is on. The gi kind of dosed his zantac on the low side so I'm just assuming that he did the same thing with the prilosec which would be a bad thing right now. Well I'm going to bed because my son is actually sleeping right now. Thanks for always letting me vent to you all.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
Mama.....HUGS. I give you kudos for BF this long with such struggles. The prilosec dosage seems a little low, but we stopped prilosec before she was 3 months because it wasn't working. If he's still always wanting to eat, this is called "comfort feeding" and probably means his esophagus is still burning. I'd call to see if you can up the dosage.

If you can, go take some time for yourself (easier said than done, and I know all you want is a quiet house for a few hours of sleep, not go out and do something!) Could you pump a few bottles for Kody, and have your DH take the kids for a few hours while you go sit at a quiet park this weekend?

As for the switch, i know it's not "advised" to mix the formula and BM, but it may be the key to getting you a break. It won't hurt him any more that he already is. And being crabby, out of sorts, and a little flared is normal during a switch - it's tough on their systems, which is why most tend to get diarrhea for a day or so. I can't recall if you've tried the other formulas yet, but the best for most of these kids seems to be RTF Alimentum or Nutramigen. A few mentioned Neocate or Elecare, which could also be options, though all of these are like liquid gold. We did so much better on Nutram.

For helping with passing gas, you could try abdominal massage and stimulating the ileocecal valve. Works for most, though the ileocecal valve will generally make them scream for a minute or two until it starts to open.

We hear you, hon - just remember is does get better, even if time seems to be standing still. We're here to listen to your venting with sympathetic and empathetic ears. I never thought the GERD journey would come to an end, but it does. The sleep does get better, they will eventually eat, and they will stop screaming. It just takes so long, so much energy, and there's just nothing left for you.

BTW, my dh and I had never had a fight in 11 years....until reflux came into our lives. The communication and help needs to be there, and your dh may need to hear the black thoughts before he understand where you are in your head.

I just wanted you to know that I am thinking about you and praying things get better very soon. I know for MONTHS the only time Johnnie wasn't screaming was when we were outside walking. I was soooo tired from him being awake every hour that I thought I would die, but I walked anyway. Every one asks me all the time how many times a night he wakes up - and honestly I cant tell you anymore- because Im on auto pilot, but it's ok because I feel almost normal, even though im awake every couple hours. I guess your body just learns to adapt. I'm not saying this to make you feel hopeless - just to let you know that things will get better. Just hang on and try hard to just relax with the baby- they feel stress too and that makes them hurt more. Sometimes I make myself have a time out and just sit in the rocker and gently rub his forehead and you can just feel him almost melt. Those are the precious moments you hang on to. It would be great if we weren't all over the country - I think we would make an awesome mommies club!

So sorry to hear that Kody is in pain, poor little mite. Poor you too with the sleep depravation and having another to look after. Just wanted to add that my son is also on Prilosec and Zantac. My son (5 months) is on what they call mups over here in the UK in which you dissolve a tablet in water and administer so I'm not sure of the comparisons if you are on the compound, but my son is currently taking Prilosec 10mg 2 x a day and also Zantac 2ml 2 x a day. He got no relief from his pain until his dose was upped to the full 20mg a couple of weeks ago. Now, his sleep has improved and his pain is under control. If you feel that Kody is still suffering you need to push your GI to up his meds or find someone else who will treat it more aggressively. We spent too long watching our son suffer because our pediatrician was reluctant to admit that our son needed a higher dose. I really hope Kody gets some relief soon

I have 3 boys, youngest has gerd, 18 months of no sleep. Prevacid 2x/7.5 mg thinking of switching to prilosec.
Hugs to you Mama. Don't lose hope. This will pass and soon your little one will be sitting up and there will be a slight improvement, then he will be crawling, and all those tummy muscles will get stronger and HOPEFULLY there will be even more improvement. The exhaustion and frustration is a heavy burden so try to get some help if you can. Your little guy is blessed to have you for his mama. You're in my prayers. It WILL get better.

Hi, I had the EXACT SAME experience when trying to wean my dd onto Alimentum. She absolutely hated it. I couldn't even mix it with bm - she always knew. Nutramigen on the other hand, she would take. What I did was start with 1/2 oz Nutramigen to 4 1/2 oz bm and gradually increased the Nutramigen every couple of days. After about a month, she was completely weaned. Don't lose hope...
