Lorenzo b.4/25/07 1 week in NICU w/ aspirate pneumonia from a reflux episode; diagnosed GERD at 9weeks; Used Zantac for 5months. Currently using Chinese Medicine and Craniosacral Therapy. GERD, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Sensory Processing Disorder. Ask me about breastfeeding a refluxer! Pic: day 5 in the NICU.
Thanks for asking after Lorenzo! Although he is still having some issues with reflux and apnea, we have had some major breakthroughs as a result of starting treatments with a new Chinese medicine practitioner who specializes in pediatrics and is absolutely amazing. After almost two years of exclusive breastfeeding, he is actually eating like a normal toddler. And after a year of being literally unable to fight off any respiratory infection he was exposed to (which led to an average of two serious URI's per month for an entire year), he has not been sick for over a month -- and even more exciting is that he appeared to be coming down with something twice, and was able to fight it off both times! He had been plagued by some mysterious, and relatively minor, issues too, like fairly extreme sensitivity to light and extremely frequent bm's, and those have resolved as well.

He still refluxes and seems to have minor aspirations at times, but much less frequently, and while we know that he still has some sleep apnea episodes, his overall sleep quality has improved enough that his energy level is substantially increased and he no longer has bags under his eyes all the time. He even slept for 4 hours in a row twice in one month -- breaking his previous lifetime record of 3 hours.

I guess the thing that brings me the most joy is that I no longer feel the weight of constant worry and stress about his health. For the first time in his life, I feel like I am really free to enjoy him and our relationship without fear or distraction. Interestingly, as I come to feel confidence in his growing health, I am finally feeling free to grieve for his rough beginning, which there was never really time to revisit in my heart. It feels like our whole family is healing now....finally.

I'm so glad to hear that Atalia is doing so well, and that Amalia is moving toward weaning from meds. I must admit that, while I think of you at other times, you are most present in my mind when Lorenzo is struggling with teething, and I comfort myself with the knowledge that you and Amalia survived, and surely we will too :) The girls are just beautiful, and it looks like there is lots of love between them. We'll be keeping a good thought and prayer for Amalia and the med wean!

I am just delighted with so much joy to know Lorenzo is doing so much better. I totally understand your feeling regarding being able to relax about his health...so totally do.... I've told people that for 3 months now I have finally been able to really enjoy my girls... to relax and not think about a possible cold that might land them to ER....or not let them sleep for a week due to the horrible reflux flare up, or a possible food reaction...... never will I take for granted the health of my girls- no one should!! God Bless you and Lorenzo and again- I am so happy for you both and will pray he continues to improve.
