Endoscopy?
I talked to my daughter's GI doctor yesterday and he mentioned a next step after the impedence test would be an endoscopy. He said one of the things they would be looking for was something about an allergy but I can't remember for the life of me what he was talking about. Anyone know what kind of allergy thing he may have been refering to?

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
I'd try and do the EDG first. It's an easier test IMHO. YEs they have to do to the OR but it's over and done with fast verses a 24 tube down the nose test....again JMHO

Yes they can look for EE disorders with an EDG. They will take biopses to check to see how many EOS are present as well. This will enable them to make sure it is reflux going on and not one of those above mentioned EE disorders. Those can mimic reflux but are not reflux.

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
EE is Eosinophillic Esophagitis...Eosinophills are like allergic cells that appear in the esophagus and tummy...they biopsy during the endoscopy and look for those. If there are too many the child can be diagnosed with EE and have a special diet. Here's a good link... http://www.medicinenet.com/eosinophilic_esophagitis/article.htm The endo is pretty easy...they are sedated, so no screaming and crying...they wake up cranky and thirsty, but Zack was fine within 20 minutes and was normal after that. Good luck!

My son's doctor usually does the endoscopy first before the probe but if he thinks the child needs both then they schedule the probe to be placed while under anesthesia for the scope. My son had his probe placed not under anesthesia and it really wasn't a big deal but if they are doing both it is better to go ahead and place it under anesthesia. I am surprised they are doing the probe before the scope (not that the probe is a big deal but that usually if the reflux warrants a probe then it warrants a scope.) Are they doing the impedance or PH probe? If doing the impedance then I would do it on medication. The PH doesn't read nonacidic reflux so it must be done off meds. If the child is having difficulty on meds then it gives a good picture of what's going on, if there is still acid breakthrough, and if the meds need to be changed around, etc. That is the great thing about the impedance. For example, Holden refluxed 202 times but only 3 were acidic so this told us he has severe reflux but that the Prevacid was working. It also meant that his is behavioral since their wasn't much acid breakthrough but at the same time he would be in some serious trouble without the Prevacid.

Yes, what everyone else said..LOL

They can also test for Celiac's Disease as well with a scope (EDG).

Check with your
doctor first!
