Homeopathic remedies?
Just curious - has anyone come across any homeopathic remedies for reflux that they feel are beneficial... and safe? Anyone have any experience with "Colic Calm," or other gripe waters? Thanks for your input!!

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
I haven't found any homeopathic remedies that work per se, but there are some natural supplements that are supposed to help. We tried Gripe Water and Colic Calm to no avail. I'd contact a holistic MD, acupuncturist, TCM doc, or naturopath before starting any homeopathic regime though.

We've had tremendous luck with probiotics and prebiotics for the entire house. Some "upset stomach" remedies include ginger and peppermint, and sometimes DGL (degly...something...licorice) for ulcers. Also suppelemtation of magnesium made a huge difference in my little one's demeanor (helps to regulate the CNS and about a million other things.) The probiotics, prebiotics, and Mg were on suggestion of our ped. HTH!

I was told to never give anyone with reflux peppermint- because it relaxes the muscles and makes the reflux worse- Is that wrong?

Like I said, these are things I heard for upset stomach - peppermint does relax the muscles, but helps with nausea.

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
I know an adult who swears by Papaya. It comes in tablets that you can take. Never tried it with Jedd. We have seen results from Jedd's probiotic. He's never been more healthy than he is now. He is also on a complete vitamin. The combination of the two seem to work well.

Although there are a variety of homeopathic treatments available over the counter, it is important to work with a homeopathic practitioner if you want more than an outside chance that a remedy will work. The essential part of homeopathy that gets left out with over-the-counter remedies is a comprehensive understanding of the individual patient's constitution. For homeopathy to really work its magic, the remedy should be specific to the individual, not mass produced. So, generally, OTC homeopathic remedies are a can't hurt, might help approach. If you want better odds than that, seek out an experienced practitioner.

Just FYI, we have used several alternative treatment approaches with our son, including Chinese Medicine, Craniosacral and Homeopathy, and have had some not so inspiring results and some totally miraculous results. It depends A LOT on the practitioner.
