Naps and Nightime Sleep
We just failed a 4th round of trying to ween off of Prevacid. The first symptom we noticed (I think it is a symptom) was disrupted sleep. Yesterday my son stayed up for 7 hours without a nap. He was so tired that he finally just collapsed. Then he woke up at 4AM and would not go back to sleep without a bottle. He is 11 months old and has not done that in months. Please refresh my memory. I know that disrupted sleep is on the list of symptoms, but I'm not sure if refusing naps is a symptom. Today, for example, I tried putting him down 3 times and waited 30 mins each time only to have to go in and get him. The last time he finally slept for 1.5 hours; that was after being awake for 4.5 hours since he woke up in the AM.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
Yup - you got it in one, mama. Sometimes these kiddos never learn to sleep in the first place (we were one of those *sigh*) Even though my dd's GERD was dx'd as "mild" we didn't have a truly successful wean until 16 months. And she only slept well from months 9-13, then we were back to crappy sleep. You can always put him back on the meds to see if that's the case, or try maalox or mylanta at night and see what happens.

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site:
We have NO plans to wean Jedd fully until he can tell us how he feels when he doesn't take his meds. We want him to be able to describe what is going on. I would just feel bad if I had to go by symptoms only, I just can't let him go through that with his history of such GERD pain.

We have however, successfully weaned form a PPI to a H2!!! That was HUGE for us!!!!!! WHHOOHOOOO!!!

You can always try that. KWIMWe started with one dose of the H2 per day for like 2 months and then just went for it. It's gone well now, for about 5 or so months and we plan to keep it that way for now.

At 2.5 years old, I can still see days where he has flairs. So, we won't be weaning for a while. :-(

In the grand scheme of a child's life, being on GERD meds for like 3-5 years is a relative short amount of time.
