Need help re: allergy/intolerance trial
Hello all,

Jazzy had to repeat some B/W with protein in her system (which she usually doesn't eat because it sends her into an EC flare up). I gave her a grilled cheese sandwhich on Thurs. and Fri. She loved it and was fine. Then again on Sat. Sunday she started to become a bit whiney, and lacked her usual appetite. Sunday night was a bad night for her. She woke up uncomfortable etc... Now today, she asked for some more, so I agve her a bit, but she didn't finish it.

Should I push thru this in hopes of her being able to tolerate it? Should I stop, wait and try again????

OPINIONS PLEASE!!!

Kathryn, Pager Volunteer and mommy to Emily Mia 02/04/07. 3 years old with GERD. 30mg Prevacid and Pepcid AC. Mylanta needed for flares. Failed prilosec med switch. Tried and failed many med weans but GERD and pain are well controlled. Functional constipation. Reoccurring SBBO. Suspected IBD or autoimmune disease. Resolved issues: MSPI, CSID (acquired), Stage 2 kidney reflux, Chronic diarrhea.
Audrey Meadow 06/20/08. born 34/35 weeks. Still b/f and eats everything! ftt and chronic constipation.
this is difficult b/c emily has similar but so very different issues so i will tell you what i do for emily- (not what i would do in your situation or what i think you should do). :)

when we were trying out foods for emily (which we still do from time to time) we had horrible reactions to foods she was "supposed" to handle. now, what i mean by "supposed to" is, with the limited diagnosis of CSID and GERD (and now IBD) the foods we gave her she by the GI's standards was supposed to tolerate.

we were told a minimum of 2 weeks on any one "MOST tolerated" food intro. b/c her gut was so sensitive to not only food but still healing as well. If she would go past 2 weeks (or have horrible screaming episodes, bloating, and worse then usual diarrhea) we discontinued sooner.

in our experience it was always worse the first week of a new food but it got better after that. I had read and been told that the body has to learn to digest certain foods. BUT when she is flaring- pretty much no food is good food...

i hope the tests come out better this time around good luck!

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
I'd say try one day trial of a new food and monitor reactions for 72 hours. Then intro it again after that and remonitor. I also say to make sure there's NOTHING else that could possibly upset her tummy in that time period to really see if it's a reaction. I dunno though - that kid of yours it a stubborn, feisty one!!!

2 healthy daughters (knock wood) Cory (16), Kim (11) & Eric (4) diagnosed with e.e. (scoped 8/08), GERD & severe food/seasonal allergies, asthma. Cried non-stop first 17 mths. of life Found out he is allergic to cow's milk, soy, eggs, and peanuts. Takes Prevacid, Neocate One Plus & Flovent.
Sorry, not sure of what B/W stands for. While I'm very familar with the treatment for EE - I don't know how it varies for treatment of EC. Normally, the TOP 8 allergenic foods are avoided (includ. milk, soy, wheat, eggs), so I would have to say that cheese might not be a protein of choice. Other foods are trialed slowly to see if they cause a flare of the eosinophils. So, something like turkey MIGHT be ok (or not). How are the Drs. attempting to treat your daughter's EC? I forget where you go - is it an eosinophilic disorders dept.? We go to Children's Hospital in Philadelphia. Eric has a scope tomorrow, as he has been purely elemental for 6 weeks, then we start food trials. I do remember that your daughter has problems with elemental too. Ellen

Thanks ladies,

Jazzy's treatment for EC is Zaditen, a mast cell stabilizer. I have avoided all protein because of her EC. And yes, she doesn't tolerate ANY formula so far. I guess I could try turkey and see, she would love that. It's so hard at this age as she is begging for cheese, yogurt etc... B/W is blood work....... Thanks, I'll maybe take her off cheese for a while and try something else.
