Flavorings
Hi I posted this on my last topic but I thought maybe I could get better responses opening it up. Kody is starting alimentum and hates it. It breaks my heart to see him eating it. Anyway, I see a lot of flavoring ideas for elecare and I'm wondering if those same flavorings would work for alimentum? Could anyone share? Right now he gets about 2 oz alimentum mixed with about 3-4 oz of bm. I'm afraid he may not take it once the bm is lessened though. He just took 2 bottles from me today but lots of bm in it and very warmed worked better. I'm pumping right now to give it to him but of course I can't tell if it's helping him or not. I would hate to stop bfing to be in the same boat as we're in. eek! Mommato3- You said Holden eats elecare and you flavor it with vanilla flavoring from your local coffee shop. I was wanting to know what it was you used to put in it and how much? I wanted to see if I could do the same for the alimentum. My hubby works at Starbucks so I was thinking he could bring something home similar. Do you mind sharing your input? Thanks

Neocate actually makes flavoring packets called Neocate Splash and they can be added to any kind of formula. My GI gives them out for free so you could ask your GI or you can order them online. Nestle also makes flavoring packets and you can get them at Walgreens from their pharmacy or on their website. I think they have to special order them. They are only like a dollar per flavor packet. They have all kinds of flavors. You may want to just keep going slowly with the transition and skip the flavorings. Even though it tastes nasty too us doesn't mean they know any different. My son likes Elecare so much he actually sticks his fingers in the can and licks it right off his finger and says YUM, YUM! Hang in there you will find something that works for him.

The Nestle Flavor packets have been discontinued, sorry. :-( Some sites may still have some left, but buy now I bet they have depleted their stock pile. It's been almost a year since that co merged with another and they stopped making that line of product.

You can use Nestle Quick too or the syrup stuff. All that will work as well.

We use something called Monin O'Free (sugar free) It has splenda in it which I'm not crazy about giving him but it only takes like one drop of the stuff so our doc says don't worry about it. We have tried just the regular kind called monin but it has some extra calories that my son can't tolerate b/c he's already at 26 calorie per oz formula but my friend that uses the strawberry Monin does great with it. I'll ask my nutritionist tomorrow if she knows of anything at starbucks but basically it is just a bottle of flavoring that they put in their coffees. I don't know how it would taste with the Alimentum b/c we use it with unflavored Elecare. But with Holden I didn't even mix breast milk in with the Alimentum when I switched (literally he was cold turkey) b/c he would get really mad at it. I guess b/c it still tasted like breast milk what he was use to but now with an awful taste so he would get really frustrated. It worked better for us to just give him Alimentum no other options and after two days he began drinking it great but when we mixed it with breastmilk he would take just enough to get the edge off and this went on for days. i guess it was b/c it still tasted like what he was use to except now with an awful "off taste" to it. Everyone is different though. Good luck. Our nutritionist comes tomorrow so I'll ask her if she knows of anyone flavoring alimentum and about starbuck's.

Thanks I appreciate it. We haven't tried the alimentum by itself to get him to drink it. It seems to be working mixing it right now. He got more alimentum than breastmilk mixed yesterday so hopefully gradually will keep iincreasing it and he'll start drinking it. He wants to eat all the time right now so I think he may be in a growth spurt. I decided to try and wean him gradually because he was getting stressed about going cold turkey and I was trying to pump but I got a plugged milk duct ouch. Hopefully he'll still take the bottle this afternoon for me. We'll see. Thanks again and I hope Holden has a good appt with the nutritionist.

She said that Starbuck's prob. had something similar. She said she has even used banana baby food to flavor stuff before for an older child so their are many options. Hope things go smoothly for you.
