Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
I think your chances are greater if you have other family members who have had it. There have been case studies done that GERD tends to run in families and hos some genetics to it.

That said, noone in our family has it and Jedd suffered pretty badly from it. :-(

My DH and I will be trying again in the near future hopefully. I had a MC so we have to wait it out for now. This is our thinking on the subject:

With Jedd we learned soooo much that our next trip with GERS should be much easier. We won't suffer with a bad GI, we won't wait to see a DR, we won't do alot of things that we did this time because we will KNOW better next time.

My sister has a child with an extremely RARE (only 16 known cases in the world) genetic disorder and they went on to have 2 more. Both are perfectly healthy.

I have NO idea if this has helped any but just my DH and I thoughts on the subject of having more kids. We really think we will be able to handle it much better the second time around.

Hard decision though. I completely understand. For us, we have to throw in the chance of having another child with a heart defect as well. And we are still willing to have another go at it. HUGS

I am Jacky, mommy to Joslyn Olivia (April 2008) and Katelyn Isabel (November 2009).
Joslyn was dx'ed with Silent Reflux with breath apnea at 5 days old. VERY SCARY!
Katelyn is a spitter reflux baby. Started at 3 days old as well. (Both were/are breast fed.. symptoms came on when my milk came in).
Joslyn has been reflux free since she was 12 months (suffered poor weight gain for a few months) and Katelyn is now on Zantac... waiting to see if it works.
We are almost 17 weeks preg with our (hopefully) second baby. We have the reflux fear too added on top of losing this baby like our first 2.

I am nervous that this baby will have the same issues that joslyn had... but some mommy's here said something that helped. They said that now we know what to look for and how to handle it.

Perfect world? OUr new baby will not have any illness and will not require to be in the children's hosp for 5 days following birth! That would be perfect.

Good luck

Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
Hi there. Of course you know that the answer lies in your heart and what you think you can handle.

In my family both my husband and I have GERD. I have three children and only my youngest has GERD. My first had some colic that lasted three months and my middle has very very mild reflux. Zantac as need very rarely.

So it is possible to have a non GERD baby next time. :)

Debbie, Mom to:
Derek,10/29/02 GERD,Can't have any legumes(soy, being the worse), allergic to PN/Tree Nuts, struggled to gain weight for years, my "picky" eater,Takes Zegerid. Johnny, 12/05/99 GERD, managed by diet, allergic to cashews/pistachios.
Hi, I think the chances are good a second child will have it, but at least you will be more prepared to handle it. I have two boys with it, and I have it, but I try to tell myself, things could be a lot worse! Go for it, you will be able to do it better this time if your second child has GERD.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
There is a genetic link, but nothing is ever for certain. I agree with everyone that even if the second has GERD, you know what to look for and how to treat it. My brother has 3 kids - the first had no issues at all, the second is autistic, and the third has Hirschprung's. You never know, and the good Lord will never place upon you a burden that you can't handle (even though I will be taking Him to task about the whole reflux issue when we meet!)

Abby was our 3rd daughter and 1st with reflux. I think that my middle dd might have had a mild case of it but we did a little cereal in her bottle for awhile and she was fine. Abby does have MSPI and I highly suspect that my 1st dd had this as baby. She still gets constipated from having milk products.

I feel for you b/c if Abby was my 1st it would have def been a hard decision to have another. My Dh said that she sealed the deal to be our last with everything that we went through with her. But at least if it happened again I would know so much more and hopefully that would have lessened the sleepless nights and the pain she had to go through until we found the right combo of meds and formula. Good luck with your decision.

Check with your
doctor first!
