Does this sound like reflux??
Haven't posted on here in a long time. Abby turned 3 in April. She has been on Prevacid solutabs (7.5mg 2x's per day) since she was 4 or 6wks (can't remember). We started to wean her in the fall of last year. Started with splitting her am dose in half. Did this for a few months w/o any problems so we decided to drop the am dose. She did fine and we kept her pm dose at 7.5mg. I can't remember exactly when we started splitting her pm dose in half but I think it was around her b-day (April 10th). Well since then I have noticed something and I am wondering if it is reflux. Sometimes she will start coughing for no reason. She isn't eating or drinking at these times. The last two times this has happened she coughs about 2-3 times then will gag and sound like she is going to throw up but doesn't. Then she is fine. Does this sound like it could be reflux?? These episodes don't seem to bother her so that is good.

I really thought we were in the clear esp. since she has been doing fine with eating foods with milk and soy in them. Still won't drink cows milk though. Have to sneak it in things like oatmeal but does eat yogurt. But these episodes have me wondering. I am also a little concerned b/c we don't see a pedi GI anymore. Her pedi has been prescribing the Prevacid. I am wondering if she is still having these episodes what he will do. Thanks for any imput ladies! Andrea

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
Good, I can post today. Last night it would not let me answer your question for some reason.

I'd say it's reflux related as long as you don't think she had seasonal allergies. Jedd has allergies and his med became ineffective and he got like that until his new med kicked in and cleared up the mucous.

It certainly can't hurt to do a split dose again and see if the symptoms lessen. KWIM You can always try a H2blocker this time as well.

2 healthy daughters (knock wood) Cory (16), Kim (11) & Eric (4) diagnosed with e.e. (scoped 8/08), GERD & severe food/seasonal allergies, asthma. Cried non-stop first 17 mths. of life Found out he is allergic to cow's milk, soy, eggs, and peanuts. Takes Prevacid, Neocate One Plus & Flovent.
Hi! Just keep in mind that a lot of parents think that the child has outgrown the cow's milk intol./allergy & maybe that really hasn't happened. My 10 yr. old daughter was STILL having issues with milk (tested negative on scratch test though), so I had to yank it from her diet AGAIN. I do let her have some baked into items, but not in cereal, etc. BTW, how did you make out with the dog (water dog?) & allergy problem? I'm still longing for a dog, but I'm soooooooo afraid because Eric is super bad with his allergies/asthma. Ellen

Debbie, Mom to:
Derek,10/29/02 GERD,Can't have any legumes(soy, being the worse), allergic to PN/Tree Nuts, struggled to gain weight for years, my "picky" eater,Takes Zegerid. Johnny, 12/05/99 GERD, managed by diet, allergic to cashews/pistachios.
That sounds like reflux. It's the phlegm in their throat. The acid comes up and causes the mucous to build up. Both my kids would cough and gag like that from reflux. Get her back on meds quickly before she gets much worse is my advice. Also, congestion will worsen the reflux, so treat seasonal allergies and colds accordingly to keep the reflux at bay.

Thanks all for the replies! As soon as she started doing it I though OMG reflux! But then I didn't want to jump to conclusions.

Jessica, as far as I know she doesn't have any allergies. Hasn't had any of the symptoms etc. The H2Blocker is a good idea. I am just concerned about keeping her on the PPI too long.

The only milk products that she has right now is the hidden kind. She has been doing fine on these for 18months now. I rarely get the opportunity to add milk to her oatmeal. She NEVER drinks it by itself. I will go ahead and try and limit the milk in things she eats. Our dog (Molly) is good! She is a Portuguese Water Dog. She is full of energy and my girls love her. We haven't had any problems with my husbands allergies at all. And I LOVE that she doesn't shed!! I would def recommend the breed but only to families that can give them lots of attention and exercise.

Debbie, I went ahead and put her back on the half a tablet at night dose and see if that does the trick.

The only thing that sucks about this is that the Prevacid card is expired and of course our insurance now doesn't classify Prevacid as one of its preferred meds so it is $50 month! UGG!! But at least I have a small supply stocked up that should get us through 2 months or so. Andrea
