Don't know what to do
Well I've been ready to pull my hair out all week and Kody just keeps getting worse. He has been refluxing so much worse lately but he's been screaming towards the evening time. He will eat and then fall asleep and then wake up screaming. Tonight was worse then last nights. I don't know what to do. He's currently on zantac but I think it is a low dose of it. He refluxes now and screams about it. I took out soy from my diet this week and it hasn't made a difference in fact over the course everyday he gets worse. Now it's friday night and I think we're going to have a hellish weekend. Everything was going so well when I went dairy free and then we started erythromycin and the zantac and wham he's worse now. I don't know if it's the antibiotic although if he goes off of it then he's coughing and really congested. But now he's congested again and he sounds like he's starting to wheeze a little. I just wanted to vent mostly but also get some input. I need to call the gi on Monday because something has got to change. Did anyone have the experience of taking a food out and things going really well and then wham bad again? I'm just confused on what's going on. I also am wondering if I should try to push for a ppi at this point. Kody hasn't had any strange poops so I don't know that it's food related. That all cleared up when I took dairy out of my diet. Crossing my fingers that he's going to be able to get some rest tonight. The poor guy was so exhausted today from yesterday but it looks like he may have another rough night again. Well I'd better go relieve my hubby. Thanks in advance from any input you all have.

Yes, now is time for a PPI. Put in a call early Monday morning and ask for an RX to be sent down to a pharmacy. I would not get off the phone until it gets agreed to get sent.

I am not sure, call the pharmacist and ask about dairy in the E-mycin, they would know for sure. but in the compound there are all sorts of hidden things like that. You might be on to something there.

Call the pharmacist now and ask them about the dose for Mylanta or some other OTC med you can use to help with the break through pain over the weekend. IF you see a response to that then you can also ask the GI on Mon if you can get an RX for Carafate. It's like super mylanta and is by RX only. Works wonders for some kids.

I wish I had the answer but I dont. I know that Erythromycin is very hard on the stomach- causing severe gas pain in a lot of people, I would imagine that it could do the same to a baby even if it is in small amounts. I would definitely demand a ppi at this point. If it was me and the diet changes were not helping then I would try to cut the erythro out for a day or 2 just to see if he becomes a little more comfortable. I will say a prayer for a good nights sleep for all of you.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
Oh mama - this is so frustrating and heartwrenching to watch. It's definitely time for a PPI and some ANSWERS! I agree with jeddsmommy - call your ped if you can't talk to the ne GE doc for using and dosing maalox or mylanta until you get it. Heck, a pharmacist can tell you how much and how often, and as it's OTC, you have the option. It's safe enough - most of use used it at some point.

HUGS and fingers crossed for a better night and good ones to come!

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Read his story for more specifics that just might help you too - Karen
Does your ped have Saturday morning hours? Any way they will prescribe the Prevacid for you vs waiting for the GI? I know it is just a few ways but when you are staring down a long misserable weekend it might make you feel better to have gotten a start on something different. Ask if you can give him the Zantac and the prevacid, spread apart of course. so you can keep the Zantac going while the Prevacid gets on board in his system. Good luck to you and give us a yell if you need to!

Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
Poor baby... I bet it is the erythr. that is causing his trouble. Get the PPI going to control the reflux and the congestion and cough will go away.

Thanks everyone for the good wishes and great vibes. We're currently giving him mylanta but I do need to call the pharmacist to see how much he should get because we're still using the dosage we found out about months ago. It helped him out a bit last night too. I don't know which ppi they would try because we've had prevacid before and he did horrible on it. The gi claims that prevacid is the best out there and that if it didn't work then it wasn't reflux. That was before he met Kody though. I'll have to probably do some fighting so they don't just tell me it's something in my diet. We also gave him a little bit more than usual of the zantac and his night was slightly better. I will call the pharmacy today and see what ingredients are in the erythromycin. I didn't think about it possibly having dairy in it. Everytime we lower his dose of it though he gags and coughs but it could be because his reflux meds are so low. I don't know but at least now I have some ideas to use over the weekend that will help us get through it a little better. This sucks big time. He's also become my little rapper. He sits there and just spits his saliva out of his mouth but he sounds like a rapper when he does it. I keep thinking it's because he's not liking the taste in his mouth but my hubby says it's because it's fun. Well he only starting doing it this past week when he's been having problems and he did it in his sleep last night. HHHMMM!!! Well I gotta go Kody is unhappy. Thanks everyone

Besides the Prevacid there is also Prilosec, Nexium, and Protonix. Don't let them tell you they can't try another one because they can. Hang in there!

erythromycin ingredients
Well I'm investigating the ingredients in the erythromycin right now. I emailed the company because they were closed today but I'll try to call them on Monday. The only ingredient that may have milk protein in it is caramel. But of course time will seem like it's standing still this weekend since I can't do anything until Monday. Has anyone had a good experience with Nexium? We have tried prevacid and not good for him, the prilosec compound worked for him somewhat but worried about the instability of it. So we haven't tried nexium yet but I wanted to know more about it. I'll let you know what I find out about the erythro. I decided not to give him his dose this morning and he's already acting better. I don't want to give him it until I find out about the caramel in it. But now we're probably going to go through the coughing and congestion worse. Oh well I know we'll survive just feels like a never ending cycle. Good thing I have all of you or I would be going insane.

If you want to try prevacid again, there is a form with no lactose he could try - it's the granules in a packet. Could be worth asking about too.

Mom to Matthew, 01/16/08, GERD baby, has been on Zantac since 2 mos. Aidan, his twin brother, no GERD. Max-ed out on Zantac at 1ml-3 times/day, and switched to Prevacid 15mg split tab 08/20/08. Switched again to 20mg Prilosec 09/18/08 due to Prevacid's restlessness/headache side effects. Reflux was out of control again and had to switch to 10mg Nexium 02/11/09. Good result so far.
My 16 month-old son has been on Nexium since Feb with excellent result. He outgrew Zantac dosage at 7 months old so we switched to Prevacid but had to stop because of the side effect: restlessness and possible headache. We then switched to 20mg of Prilosec capsule. It worked for about 3 months and he started showing symptoms again. Nexium is working wonderfully and he is never been better. Take good care of yourself and hope you'd get some rest.

I will have to ask about that prevacid and about nexium. I feel like I may have to fight to get him on a ppi. We like the gi but I just have a feeling that he's going to tell me to just change things in my diet. I feel like if it was food related we would see a dramatic difference from one day to the next. I will be holding him at night and hear him reflux. Shortly after that he squirms and starts to fuss and wakes up. He also wants to comfort feed all night. It helps him for a little while and then the cycle starts all over again. I'm on the verge of a major meltdown. I had to get out of the house for a little while today after I fed Kody just to keep my sanity and get away from all of it. It felt good but of course I worried about him the whole time too. I'll let you all know how it goes with the call to the gi.
