Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Chronic Constipation
Ryan has constant constipation. If I dont stay on top of it daily he gets really urpy and gaggy and decreases his food intake. I think it is aggrevating this reflux. I feel like I have to use Milk of Mag way too much. I had been doing the pear nectar and Karo syrup... rotating daily between the 3. It has been recommended to me that it is time to put him on Miralax. I am really torn on what to do. My 2 neighbors have their girls on it and have told me to avoid it if they can as they can not get their girls weened of of it and they are 6 yrs old. Has anyone been able to get and keep things moving with a change in diet? If so, what did you do? He is alreay on a probiotic....

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
Yes, many of them CAN function with and without miralax (my dd has had constipation since birth and we only need is occassionally now). Here's what we did and do:

probiotics (as many strains as possible - "refridgeration required" is key to getting live strains. I even double the doses when I know she's having problems or is going to due to eating something binding

Apple and pear juices and water to hydrate and make sure there's enough excess water in the system to soften stools

prunes, apricots, papaya, and oatmeal

abdominal massage several times daily (we don't need this anymore, but up until about a year old, we did)

magnesium supplement (you'd be surprised how much this helps them)

avoiding binding foods (rice, bananas, applesauce, etc - basically nothing on the BRATT diet!)

I think I have to use Miralax about once a month for 2 days or so. This was the kid that we had to use a Babylax on every other night for 6 months (and this is WITH an Rx'd stool softener daily, while also getting probiotics AND oatmeal cereal) It wasn't until we had the diet down along with the probiotics AND the magnesium that she started to go once a day without straining. She still has her days where it's rabbit pellets more often than not, but it doesn't hurt her or strain to go anymore. If all else fails, get the kid some good barley and prepare to change 5 diapers in a row after it digests!

Tracey, mom to Katie diagnosed with GERD at 3 week.
I agree with probiotics and magnesium combined with juice if he can tolerate juice. Katie was a once a week pooper and we are at every day or every otehr!

We started on Miralax in February and it has been a God send! It makes for strange poop, and sometimes when im changing the 5th or 6th poopy diaper in a day I start thinking "I asked for this?" Seriously I tried everything and nothing worked- my sister ( A RN) said he needed a tablespoon of Karo in every bottle. I thought are you crazy he will have diabetes for sure if he doesn't die from a sugar overdose at a month old! The doctor say (yeah I know) that it is fine for long term use- and I don't really care right now if I have to try to wean him later- I am just soooo grateful he can poop- Even if it means changing gross diapers! He is so much happier now that he isn't stopped up and until we started on this last PPI he wasn't throwing up much either- I think because it was able to go out the right way! Just my experience- Oh and if it gets real bad the pedialax suppositories are helpful too but since the miralax I no longer need them - another bonus.

I am Jacky, mommy to Joslyn Olivia (April 2008) and Katelyn Isabel (November 2009).
Joslyn was dx'ed with Silent Reflux with breath apnea at 5 days old. VERY SCARY!
Katelyn is a spitter reflux baby. Started at 3 days old as well. (Both were/are breast fed.. symptoms came on when my milk came in).
Joslyn has been reflux free since she was 12 months (suffered poor weight gain for a few months) and Katelyn is now on Zantac... waiting to see if it works.
Joslyn now gets constipated very easily! Which is weird for her since she never had to work for her poops!

I found for some reason water melon helps her go!

A couple of you mentioned magnesium suppliments. Is there a particular brand/dosage? Would that be like giving him the Milk of Magnesium that I am doing now?? On the abdominal massage, I seem to recall that you are suppose to go one direction and not the other but I dont remember which way to go. : )

Ask the MD or pharmacist to dose the Mg - we started at 50 mg/day when my dd was 5 months and about 13 lbs. The PPI's block a lot of mineral absorption, just an FYI. If you can find a liquid one, they're the easiest (most health food/vitamin stores should have a tincture - I use Natural Creations MgCl. I put the dosage into some watered down juice since it tastes AWFUL.) You could probably crush a tablet and mix it with a puree, but I haven't tried that and most of those are dosed for adults.

MOM has magnesium in it, but the Mg is more easily absorbed when in supplement form.

Abdominal massage: start at baby's lower right (inside of hip bone just above crease of the leg) stroke up to the bottom of the ribs, stroke across the abdomen to the left, then down the left side. Don't go the other way back, just start it all over. Also, find the ileocecal valve and perform small clockwise circles on it (lower right quadrant - you can find the location here: http://www.energybalancing.com/selfeval/ileocecal.html) I'm not much for energy balancing, but physically this does work!

I gave the ileocecal valve thing a try tonight. He screamed bloody murder then started tooting up a storm which made him laugh hysterically. He is such a boy!!! No BM but seemed more comforable and relaxed so maybe it got something going. He drank 2 oz of prune juice with his dinner so hopefully that will get things moving. Has anyone used Flaxseed meal or flaxseed oil? The gal at the nutrition store recommended it. I have read some pretty good things about it, even on the Dr Sears website.

Debbie, Mom to:
Derek,10/29/02 GERD,Can't have any legumes(soy, being the worse), allergic to PN/Tree Nuts, struggled to gain weight for years, my "picky" eater,Takes Zegerid. Johnny, 12/05/99 GERD, managed by diet, allergic to cashews/pistachios.
Watermelon is a great laxative! It helps both my kids go! Also coconut is a natural laxative, you could try coconut milk(buy the natural at the health store). My son's 6, and every day I try to get him to eat a mashed pear cup, some watermelon, or some juice with pear in it. Lately, I let him have as many popsicles as he wants, that seems to help, also, especially since he doesn't like to drink much.

We did flax oil, but it made my 6yr old burp up, so we had to stop.

I also buy pure coconut milk ice cream. It's a new product in health stores. They have a yogurs out, also, it's dairy free and soy free too. I think it's called Pure Decadence.

we are having good luck with the miralax and probiotics. adeline has been on them for a couple of weeks. made a HUGE difference. she was straining and refluxing up through her one open nostril. that has stopped. only doing 1/2 tsp of miralax in am and pm bottle. 1/2 tsp of probiotics in the am bottle. she is 20 pounds. the karo syrup was aweful. too sweet and sugary and made the reflux worse. also did the prune juice in her bottle and that did the same thing. please let me know how the mg supplement goes. think i will try that too.

Ryan had his 1 yr appointment yesterday. We are finally heading a postive direction on the weight chart. Up to 20% from 8%. That is a big accomplishement considering the child is half monkey and never stops climbing, dancing and pushing his trucks around the house. I asked about the magnesium suppliment. His ped would like to see what we can do with just foods first now that he is eating so well knowing that I have the Milk of Mag if I need it. I am definately willing to give it a shot. I made him some mini bran muffins, using prune juice and giving him watermelon and cantalope which he totally loves. We will see what happens. He reassured me that Miralax is not a bad thing. Letting him stay constipated and stretching out his bowels is. So, we have one month to get this turned around with food and then if necessary I will give in and go with the suppliment or Miralax route.
Check with your
doctor first!
