Anyone use Protonix
Hello Again. The Gi put Johnnie on Protonix because of allergic reaction to compounded prevacid and not able to get prilosec down. He has been on it since May 12th almost 3 weeks. Now he is throwing up Everything he eats for hours after he takes his dose. He is also taking Reglan at the same time so I dont know for sure if its the combination or just the protonix or just his reflux. Arggggg I have been trying to document when its the worst and its after he takes the morning and evening meds. His feeds in between are better but still vomits a lot. I just got on the web and searched side effects and it said vomiting could be one- but it also said the medication could be taken with or without food. I have been giving it on an empty stomach and waiting 20-30 minutes to feed. He CANNOT afford to throw up anything- his weight is scary- he's starting to look like he could be on the Etheopian relief infomercials!

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
From what I recall, vomiting is a side effect that may occur with protonix. Is he cutting any teeth? That always made the vomiting worse for Allie as well.

I don't know a thing about Protonix. My son took Reglan for 5 months and we're on a trial of erythromycin without much luck. The reglan helped my son's puke but he is puking crazy this week on erythro. Big hugs!! You have had a time with your meds!! Hang in there and keep trying for the right combo. Do you have to sleep feed him or will he take his bottle awake? Have you had a gastric emptying scan done? They can be unreliable but they also can show slow emptying. Sorry I couldn't be of any help, but I 'm thinking of you. Our kiddos sound a lot alike!

He eats way better when he is sleeping (no vomiting either then). He will drink about 12 ounces at night and not throw it up, but during the day he will take 2 or 3 ounces at a time. He was eating a few stage 2 foods (mostly green beans and turkey and sweet potatoes and turkey) he wont eat the fruits and throws them up instantly. Now every time I give him the food he throws it ALL up and then some. My Monday evening sitter said that he didn't throw up the jar of food she gave him the other night but then she admitted she forgot to give him his meds first too! So I'm back to thinking its an issue with the Protonix. How are we supposed to know if the medication is working if the kids don't seem any different? On the meds he doesn't sound like he has laryngitis but everything else is the same or worse ie hurling everywhere. We did get into an ENT today and he ran a basic food allergy test because he said he sounds like he has food allergies because he is always snorting like a pig. I am going to call GI back and see what they think about meds and see if we can get the gastric emptying scan done (although im not sure much is getting through to empty because its all coming out from the top! Oh and yes he is cutting teeth- he finally has a few on top to match the bottom ones- so now when he bites it really hurts! LOL

Poor guy. It does sound like it could be the meds. Maybe he's just sensitive to certain meds. I know you said that he was sensitive to the prevacid so maybe it's to the protonix as well. My son had a bad time with the prevacid too. I also know that flare ups suck. It's that darn roller coaster ride. Hopefully you'll find the right med combo for him. Hang in there! I always hear things will get better. Just keep plugging away!

Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
I am sorry that his vomiting is continuing. Would you say it is worse now than before? I just wonder if spacing the reglan and protonix might make a difference. Since it says that it can be given with food maybe try to give him some with it. It might be easier on his stomach.

I am sorry I don't have experience with either drug.

I know that vomiting is bad but I seem to remember jeddsmommy saying that her son vomited a lot until he grew out of it. not sure if it is the same level of vomiting you are experiencing. you may want to ask her.

Tonight instead of giving meds on empty stomach then feeding, I fed him then gave meds about an hour later. He didn't throw up his dinner but he Did throw up his formula I gave about 45 minutes after the meds- so I am pretty sure its the protonix. I will experiment a few more days with timing just to see if I can get it spaced enough so he wont throw up. I did notice that after he ate tonight but before I gave him the protonix he started screaming and arching his back so I know his stomach was really hurting. I may have to try to give some mylanta before he eats if I don't use the protonix prior to meals. Arggg why cant things be just a little bit easier?

Hang in there! I was just thinking of you earlier tonight and wondering how your day went. No pukes for us today! A few close calls though. I hate you've had such a hard time with medicine. Have you tried Nexium?

No- Nexium is the only one we haven't been on yet- it sounds like it wont be long though before we are. LOL I feel like im not giving it enough time- but I really think that because he was a drug baby that his body just cant tolerate medications for very long. He will take one for a while but then his body starts to reject it. He HAS to have it- because he is so sick without it- but I just cant seem to get his system to adjust to one. I pray every day that he doesn't have to go home because I KNOW it will kill him- because if Im having a hard time- they sure wont be able to do what he needs them to.

Big hugs! Bless your heart! I'll pray for that too. God placed him with you for a reason b/c He knew you would take of him and keep him alive. Oh how blessed little johnnie is!

I am the truly blessed one! He is such a joy to have. At daycare, in the 2yr old class all the girls have a baby doll- and every one of their dolls is named baby Johnnie. It's soooo cute!
