food symptoms
My 21 mo old chokes badly on food every few months and water every few days. Is this normal? Could it be related to her GERD? Does anyone else have this problem and how do you minimize it?

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site:
I would get a swallow study done. This will tell you how coordinated the suck/swallow pattern is when the child swallows. It could be that the coughing is happening to protect their airways. So, I'd want to talk to the GI ASAP about this for sure.

If there is issues with swallowing you can do thickened liquids and therapy to help.

On the flip side, it could be an aversion......Jedd used to do that when he was learning how to swallow foods when we were coming off of prolonged tube feeds. He just didn't know how to swallow. He had to learn. All he wanted to swallow were liquids and thin thin purees. So we had to build up the textures until he was accept them.

I agree with Jessica! If you are also dealing with seasonal allergies the drainage can also cause choking.
Check with your
doctor first!
