Prilosec Common Dosages?
Hi, My child is 21 months old and she is on 40 mg Prilosec/day (20 A.M., 20 p.m.) She is on the gel caps, which I break in half and empty the contents into applesauce/pudding. She was on 20 mg/day. That was not relieving all symptoms so her GI upped the dosage (and we still have problems). Does anyone know if this is a normal dosage for this age? I feel like it's very high. Also, anyone have experience to share with this form of Prilosec....what times you gave it at and how you timed it with food before and after the pill. I'm trying to get the most "mileage" out of the effectiveness of the pills and would appreciate any experience on the issue.

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
Prilosec is a PPI and they will do a better job is given on an empty stomach. I bet you would see better results if you gave it with water and waited 30 mins to feed any foods.

Alot of kids need a high dose like that to get relief from damage and current acid problems so I wouldn't' worry about the dose right now.

When Jedd was on it we gave it one hour before meals in the a.m. and right before bed. The bedtime dose ended up running into a meal because he was tube fed, but it was the best we could do. When he became oral I literally waited until around11:00 for his last dose so he would be completely empty from his bedtime snack.

We can't compare his dose because he was on a suspended compound of the stuff so we could get it in his tube. He wouldn't take anything orally when we started so we had to have a liquid PPI and Prilosec was it.

Debbie, Mom to:
Derek,10/29/02 GERD,Can't have any legumes(soy, being the worse), allergic to PN/Tree Nuts, struggled to gain weight for years, my "picky" eater,Takes Zegerid. Johnny, 12/05/99 GERD, managed by diet, allergic to cashews/pistachios.
Hi, My 6yr old is on generic omeprazole(Prilosec). He is on 20mg twice a day. We give it about 1/2 hour before breakfast, and about 1/2 hour before dinner. He's doing great. You can look up on www.marci-kids.com for the right dose for his weight, the have a dosage calculator. Kids often need higher doses...not all, but mine did. It does take some time to really kick in. Give it a couple weeks. Debbie

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
The dosage is very individualized, and it still can take up to 2 weeks to see the full effect of a dosage change (even without a med change).

Empty stomach is a necessity (about an hour from last feed and 15-60 min before next, like Jessica said). Since it needs to be mixed, I'd say no more food than is needed to get it into her (Tsp is probably sufficient). And if Prilosec doesn't seem to be enough, you can ask for a med switch to Prevacid or Nexium, or adding in an H2 blocker (Pepcid, Axid, Zantac) as well.

Check with your
doctor first!
