9yr old finally getting relief on higher dose ppi
Hi, thanks to all who rsponded to my previous posts. After MUCH pushing, I finally got my 9yr old(95lb) son on 40mg Omeprazole twice a day. His stomach aches are getting better and he is sleeping longer. Whew! The doc didn't want to do it, but my 6yr old always needed higher doses for his reflux, so I had a feeling this one did too. I just can't believe he suffered until 9yrs old with this untreated! I wonder if the reflux goes in remission and comes back later sometimes... Debbie

Woohoo!!! Way to go mom and push those docs. You're right-some kiddos just need a higher dose of PPI. I guess everyone's metabolism is different. I have heard of the things getter better or even gone (so you think) and then things coming back with a vengence.

Grace 7/2/04 reflux free now!

I think reflux can go away for a while and then come back, and my dr told me it is common for that to happen. My middle child had reflux as an infant, but went off meds successfully around 1 1/2. But then last summer she started getting "hot hiccups" (her words) often, and had a HORRIBLE cough, especially while eating, drinking, and lying down. She never complained of a stomach ache, but she was not sleeping or eating well. She went on zantac for about 2 months, then was fine. I plan to really keep my eye on her to make sure I catch the symptoms early if they come back again so she can get on meds before she gets any damage from the acid.

Thank you, both of you! I think my son always had it...maybe certain things trigger it to be worse, allergies, asthma, etc. I'm hoping to get my son under control on less meds eventually, but for now he needs it.

Picture: This is what happens when you raise a kid on health food and they get ahold of a Coke! Bad mom, that soda is NOT on the reflux diet.
UPDATE: Isaiah is now 12 and off meds! He is doing great, eating again and hopefully will be catching up in the growing department. I am still in the "hoping it sticks" phase, but we're so happy that he's better!
I'm glad he's getting relief! It's not uncommon to see reflux re-appear later on. One dr. told me that sometimes the hormones that hit around the pre-teen years will trigger GERD again. My son had it as an infant, then seemed to be fine for years. He had trouble again at around age 7 with reflux and we found out he can't have wheat...that improved things but then it was back again at age 11. He's always had it to some extent I think (he told me he has always thought that *everyone* vomits a little every time they burp) but it was mild enough not to bother him. He was on Prevacid for a year, and at 12 is now off meds and doing great!
